Job description
The Music Department at Edinburgh Napier University is proud to have a 100% student satisfaction rate for our BMus (Hons) Music course. Our graduates go on to work at the highest levels of the music industries in Scotland and beyond.
We are also the top 3 University in Scotland for Music (The Guardian University Guide 2025), offering a wide range of facilities and 24/7 access to our studios and practice rooms, which are managed by a team of Music Technicians.
To help maintain these high standards, we are currently recruiting a
Music Technician
to provide an expert technical support service for staff and students in undergraduate, postgraduate, research and consultancy projects for the Music group.
The Role:
So, you know your stuff when it comes to studio set ups. You have your HNC/HND in Music (or equivalent/related subject) and you have some work experience under your belt.
You are comfortable with basic instrument repairs, soldering cables etc and you can quite easily set up and install studio equipment for a wide variety of scenarios.
Perhaps you have already worked in a recording studio or have extensive experience as a sound engineer at a live venue.
Either way, coming to work at Napier as a Music Technician will expose you to such a wide variety of activities taking place at any given time, that you will find it impossible not to learn something new or find yourself involved in an interesting experience, like setting up equipment for a unique sound experiment or building a new custom studio from the ground up.
You will be expected of course to have that good ground knowledge of studio environments and equipment set-ups. You will need to know how to set up a recording session, know your way around recording and editing software and be able to problem solve and prioritise workload.
You will also be a point of contact for queries from students who will need assistance with things like setting up and demonstration of equipment, as well as general day-to-day maintenance/upgrades so, your customer service game will need to be up there as well.
However, you will have the support of the Senior Music Technician, who will guide you through the best practices that we have established and help you to widen your own knowledge. Simultaneously, you will be helping us to ensure that we maintain the high standard of support that we deliver to music students at ENU.
What we will need from you:
HNC/HND in Music or an equivalent field / or extensive relevant experience in an appropriate field.
Extensive experience in the use and maintenance of musical instruments and of sound management and recording systems.
Familiarity with studio environments and equipment set-ups.
IT capability: familiarity and use of subject related software (eg: Protools, Logic, Ableton) and of standard Office applications.
Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
For a full job description and comprehensive list of duties,
Benefits we offer:
We offer support and recognition wherever due, as well as fantastic benefits such as
pension with employer contributions of 17.6%, a minimum of 41 days holiday and annual pay reviews
.
