Quest Global are responsible for the design, specification and control of gas turbine projects in the UK and worldwide. This vacancy is for a consultant Naval Architect to develop a strategy to certify a warship powerplant in accordance with Lloyds Register Naval Ship Rules (NSR) 2020.
The role is to define the Lloyds Register requirements, and to specify when, how and by whom the Lloyds Register Naval Shop Rules should be engaged. There will be a series of requirement definition and compliance activities, to ensure that the gas turbine powerplant installation in the warship complies to the Lloyds Register standards.
The vacancy is a 12-month Outside IR35 contract located in Bristol, UK. Due to the UK Defence content, the work must be completed 100% in-office.
Roles and Responsibilities
To Identify and review the Inspection and Test Plans for the powerplant
Compile Lloyds Strategy Document based on an existing previous strategy
Define communication channels for Lloyds Certification to OEM's Build Lines, Purchasing, Design Approval Documentation
Plan and lead activities to certify powerplant programmes against the relevant Lloyds Register requirements
Define and optimise certification strategies with the relevant stakeholders, including the OEM's suppliers, customers, and the Lloyds Register offices
Assess new and existing substantiation created by the OEM with a view to obtaining Drawing Approval Documents (DAD) for all programme design data
Liaise directly with Lloyds Register to ensure a plan is mutually agreed and followed through to design certification.
Facilitate the definition and agreement of Inspection & Test Plans (ITP) between the suppliers and the applicable in-country representation of Lloyds Register
Actively identify and explore opportunities to minimise the effort required to achieve certification whilst maintaining full compliance
Identify and escalate risks associated with possible non-compliances, costs overruns, and/or non-adherence to timescales associated with certification
Provide feedback to the customer for continuous improvement
Work Experience
Required Skills (Technical Competencies):
Excellent understanding of Lloyds Register Naval Ship Rules (NSR) 2020, as applied to warships and their powerplants.
Good understanding of technical databases and design documentation, including technical drawings. This includes data manipulation in complex databases, writing technical reports and creation of drawings.
Good understanding of the requirements for export control and intellectual property control when transferring design data across company and geographical boundaries.
Candidates are required to be computer literate in MS Office applications e.g. Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and Internet browsers. MS Teams experience would also be useful.
Desired Characteristics
Familiarity with the working processes of gas turbine engines
Familiarity with after-market maintenance repair and overhaul (MRO) processes.
Demonstrated ability to analyse and resolve problems
Ability to document and plan
Appreciation of engine development testing and the certification process together with safety considerations, and/or previous experience in the aerospace or engineering industry or previous experience of engine, unit or component testing or instrumentation would be beneficial.
SC-level Security Clearance would be advantageous for a quick start but is not essential for the role. Enhanced BPSS background checks will be carried out for the successful candidate, who must be resident in the UK on application for this role. With the exception of US passport holders, non-UK nationalities are eligible to apply.
Required Qualifications
BSc/MSc/MEng level qualification in engineering or science discipline or the equivalent aerospace or marine industry experience
