The team

The Network team sits within the core area of Engineering in IT Services, providing underpinning network services and support to our customers. Our network team work closely with all parts of IT Services and throughout the University to ensure our services are consistently meeting and adapting to the changing needs of the University.


The University of Manchester is large and steeped in history and heritage, as such our IT landscape is broad and complex. From cultural institutions such as Jodrell Bank, to state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities such as the new Engineering Buildings and the National Graphene Institute, the scope of the services we provide are wide-ranging.

The role

The University of Manchester operates one of the largest single site campus networks in the UK and is currently undergoing a major transformation of all its LAN, Data Centre and DDI infrastructure.


The role will be working under the direction of our Network Team Lead (Passive/Cabling) on a day-to-day basis, handling incidents and service requests across our campus as assigned.


The role will undertake assignments across projects and/or service functions as required, with particular responsibility for ensuring that both the passive and active network infrastructure is delivered to University specifications and required timeframes and working with colleagues to ensure services are integrated successfully into the wider University network. Experience of structured cabling installations, terminating and testing of both copper and fibre technologies are essential to this role and experience of supporting Cisco or Aruba network equipment would be desirable. You will be required to work in a large number of different environments including but not limited to offices, laboratories, live Comms Rooms, Cabinets and occasionally Construction sites.


You will work within a team that is focused on incident and break-fix resolution for the campus network. Day-to-day direction over tasks and priorities will come through our ticketing system and you will be responsible for resolving incidents and fulfilling service requests across our LAN and Data Centre networks. You will also be working with the wider network and telecoms team to develop and continuously improve our services.

Specific Role Requirements

The successful candidates will be self-starters with the ability to work in a team or alone on time critical tasks. You will be professional and diligent. It is imperative that you have a positive 'can-do' attitude' and can work well as part of a hybrid delivery-focused team.

The person

The successful candidate will possess some of the following experience:

Structured cabling installations, terminating and testing of both copper and fibre technologies Network (LAN) troubleshooting experience either with Cisco or Aruba technology. Experience of working in a service support function, dealing with customers to resolve issues and answer their questions Ability to quickly assess outages and identify the likely root cause Experience of network security Analytical with strong attention to detail able to identify and articulate issues to a non-technical audience Ability to work to tight timescales without sacrificing quality
