Job Purpose:
To supervise all staff and be responsible and accountable for all aspects of the nursing care of residents and their social and recreational activities at the Home, deputising for the Manager in their absence and ensuring that there is a qualified nurse and sufficient nursing assistants and ancillary staff on duty at all times, remaining on duty if necessary until qualified nursing cover is arranged.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
(a) To plan supervisee and provide care for residents in accordance with their individually assessed and recorded needs, to carry out treatments and wound dressings as prescribed and to administer prescribed medicines for residents unable to self-medicate-ensuring that the NMC Code of Practice requirements are maintained at all times.
(b) To determine, in consultation with the Manager, the priorities of duties for care staff and ancillary staff to ensure that all residents receive appropriate care and assistance according to their day to day needs and taking account of their Care Plan targets.
(c) To identify residents with high dependency needs and to ensure that they receive appropriate care and assistance (e.g. assistance with toileting, bathing, personal care and hygiene, washing dressing/undressing, laundry, selecting appropriate clothes, eating, communicating, skin/pressure care, incontinence, sensory losses, mobility, chiropody, hair care, activities and stimulation, general comfort and security) and that their health and social care requirements are reviewed and recorded regularly.
(d) To ensure that the dignity of all residents is maintained at all times including making sure they are respectable and comfortably dressed and appropriately groomed i.e. hair brushed, teeth cleaned, spectacles worn, male residents shaved, female residents having make-up and lipstick applied if desired, hands and face wiped after meals and clothes, chair, bed or table surrounding floor area cleaned if necessary after meals.
(e) In consultation with the Manager, to liaise with GPs, District Nurses, and other health care and social care professionals as necessary in arranging services to meet the needs of each resident.
(f) To organise the day to day living arrangements in the Home and allocate specified duties to individual care staff to ensure the smooth running and effective management of the Home and the care arrangements.
(g) To maintain accurate, legible care records for all events affecting all residents in accordance with the requirements of good practice, including administration of medicines. Medicine stocks for individual residents, return of medicines to the pharmacist and assisting the Manager with ordering medicines and reporting deaths and matters affecting the welfare of residents to the NSCS in accordance with the requirements of the Care Standards Act 2000.
(h) To keep the Manager informed of any changes in the behaviour, health care or social care needs of residents that may require specialist medical, nursing or other professional assessment and treatment and ensure that such assessments and any necessary treatments are arranged.
(i) To assist with the preparation of Care Plans at review meetings, as required by the Manager, in conjunction with residents or their representatives, and to be responsible for implementing the action plans and working towards meeting the agreed targets for each resident.
(j) To chair the staff handover meeting at the end of each shift and give complete and accurate information about residents care and conditions to the Manager/Senior Nurse in Charge on handover to the next shift.
(k) To provide first aid for residents and staff as necessary.
(l) To assist as required with the assessments of prospective new residents.
(m) To assist with arranging the reception and admission of new residents and with all visitors to the Home.
(n) To ensure that all staff maintain good communications with residents and their relatives, taking care to maintain confidentiality of personal information according to each resident's wishes.
(o) To ensure that all staff are familiar with emergency procedures and that fire drills, and checks on equipment are carried out and recorded at the agreed intervals.
(p) To ensure that the recording and reporting requirements of Care Standards Act 200 are maintained at all times.
(q) To assist the Manager as required with the recruitment and appointment of staff and their induction, supervision, development and training.
3. Staff development, training and supervision
a) To provide regular supervision for care staff as agreed with the Manager and to assess and advise the Manager or Proprietor of their development and training needs.
(b) To assist the Manager in carrying out staff assessments, staff development and training as required.
(c) To receive regular supervision from the Manager.
(d) To ensure that staff read, understand and carry out the Home's Policies and
Procedures.
(e) To advice the Manager, or in their absence the Proprietor, of any incidents affecting the safety and welfare of residents and of any enquiries from the police, press, media and solicitors.
