JOB DESCRIPTION - Room leader



Must be Level 3 Childcare Qualified

Purpose of Post



1. Plan the day-to-day management of the room, including staff management, planning and administration works. Checking ratios and deployment of staff. Carrying out room checks for Health and safety.

2. To oversee successful, high quality childcare provision, ensuring that standards are met and children receive excellent quality care and education; use appropriate systems to monitor individuals.

3. To supervise and support the other personnel within the room therefore implementing high standards of quality practices.

4. To provide a safe, stimulating environment for the children, with creative and appropriate play and learning opportunities.

5. To liaise with the Setting Manager, Deputy Manager, and other Room Leaders/ Seniors to ensure consistency in provision.

6. To ensure the room is looked after and maintained, this includes keeping clean fixtures and fittings, toys, and resources. Setting up areas to provide a warm and nurturing but fun environment.

7. To ensure that display boards in the room are used to showcase the children's work.

8. To work alongside the other staff in the room to plan and implement activities that are stimulating for the children and progress their learning experiences.

9. To engage and discuss clearly with other staff in the room what your intent is for the day and how it will be implemented and to what impact you are hoping for it to have.

10. To display good team working skills and leadership skills.

11. To ensure that all staff working in your room have an awareness of children's significant information such as allergies or medical needs ensuring this is reviewed and checked daily, and this information is passed to the relevant people working with children in your room.

12. To ensure all health and safety policies are adhered to with in the room.

13. To ensure all festivities and celebrations and cultural experiences are promoted in the room as part of the children's wider learning.

14. To carry out assessments termly on the children in your key group and ensure other keyworkers are doing there assessments on their key groups then review all children's progress in the room and take any necessary actions that are required to support children further. Such as utilising our ENco or SENco support, liaising with parents or other agencies.

Main Duties



1. To have a thorough understanding of the Early Years Foundation Stage and Safeguarding and Welfare requirements and the ability to meet them;

2. To be oversee the key person system within the room, including being key person to a number of the children in the room as well as 'back up' key person to all children;

3. To attend monthly staff meetings as appropriate and organised via the management.

4. To manage staffing levels within the room to ensure they comply with required ratios;

5. To be responsible for all administrative duties associated with the management of the room, e.g. session planning, creation / maintenance of children's records, ordering equipment, maintaining an inventory;

6. To manage the development and implementation of systems to monitor and record child development.

7. To promote the aims and objectives of the Setting;

8. To promote the high standards of the Setting at all times to parents/carers, staff and visitors;

9. Liaise with parents/carers, other family members and staff to help ensure that the particular needs of children are met and that parental choice is considered in terms of care given;

10. To plan and implement appropriate objectives and policy for the room and Setting;

11. To ensure that a high standard of quality care and education is provided at all times;

12. To lead a team of professional workers and to ensure good practice at all times;

13. To liaise with outside agencies as required;

14. To share any child protection concerns immediately with the Designated Person;

This job description works alongside those of all other personnel. The manager's responsibility is to ensure that the staff team are working to their full potential.

Skills, aptitude, knowledge and experience



A sound knowledge of The Early Years Foundation Stage Framework

Experience of working as part of a team in a childcare setting

Previous experience of caring for, or working with children aged 0-5 in a voluntary or paid capacity

A commitment to the provision of high quality childcare with an interest in the care, learning and development of young children

Knowledge of child protection issues

Experience of being a key worker for a number of children and using systems to monitor progress

Experience of managing a team, preferably in a childcare setting

An understanding of working with children with special educational needs

A positive approach to learning and gaining new skills through teamwork and training opportunities

Personal qualities



Enthusiasm for giving children the highest quality care and education opportunities

Good organisational, record keeping, planning skills

Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with colleagues, parents, carers and children

A positive approach to inclusive practice, with children, colleagues, parents and carers

Leadership, management and effective delegation skills

Flexibility - occasionally working hours might be changed, e.g. if the setting hosts a Parent's Evening

Qualifications



A recognised childcare qualification at Level 3 or above, e.g. DPP, NVQ Level 3, L3 Diploma in Childcare & Education, Diploma for the Early Years Workforce (EYE) or working towards one.

A positive approach to gaining further qualifications

Completion of other relevant courses
