What you will do

We have an opportunity for a suitably qualified and experienced Occupational Health Technician to join the South Wales team. The role will be based in Port Talbot but travel across our other South Wales sites will be required.

Maintaining and promoting health at work is key to achieving personal well-being and effective performance at work. The main aim for occupational health is to prevent ill health from wherever it may arise in the workplace. Occupational health is a multifaceted activity concerned with the prevention of ill health in employed populations.

It involves a two way partnership between work and health and is as much related to the effects of the working environment on the health of workers as to the influence of the workers state of health on their ability to perform tasks for which they are employed. The main aim for occupational health is to prevent, rather than cure, ill health from wherever it arises in the workplace.

The Occupational Health Technician reports to the Surveillance Team Leader as a part of the OH team, will provide Occupational Health screening services to Tata employees at the Port Talbot and our Gwent sites.

Within the role you will perform health assessments, fitness to work assessments and health surveillance, under indirect supervision of the Surveillance Team Leader / Occupational Health Advisor in line with professional standards, company standards and legislative requirements. Responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

  • Undertaking all health surveillance including, audiometry, spirometry, skin & HAVs. Experience of biological monitoring would be an advantage.
  • Undertaking safety critical medicals.
  • Carry out preplacement medicals for any new starters
  • Liaise with Safety Facilitators / Works Area regarding release of health surveillance.
  • Provide accurate written electronic reports to Management through COHORT system ensuring confidentiality is adhered to.
  • Manage and organise personal workflow (time management) and working on own initiative to meet the OH service and business requirements.
What you will need

In order to be considered, the Occupational Health Technician will possess the following qualifications and experience:
  • Occupational Health experience preferred
  • Good literacy and numeracy skills
  • Able to work with minimum guidance and supervision and as required seeks help/advice from other OH professionals
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal to all levels of the organisation.
  • Demonstrate trust, and have the ability to build good working relationships within the team
