Barclays UK Operational Risk oversees the Operational Risk profile of BUK, spanning all business areas, Retail Products (Cards, Loans, Current Account & Payments, Tesco Bank, Mortgages, Savings & Insurance), Business Banking, Customer & Digital and Barclays UK Chief Operating Office. BUK has a significant transformation agenda including integration of Tesco Bank. BUK COO encompasses Technology, Change, Operations, Data & Analytics and Office of the COO.
The role holder will lead a team of senior risk professionals to provide second line oversight of the BUK Chief Operating Office operational risk profiles; providing an independent view on how the risk profiles are being managed against agreed tolerances. The role holder will partner the businesses, both directly and through their team, with the purpose of ensuring that the First Line of Defence effectively and optimally manages operational risk. The role holder will also be responsible for thought leadership and management of BUK wide operational risk activities.
As BUK is a ring-fenced entity, there are a number of committees and governance bodies that the role holder will represent Operational Risk on.
The ideal candidate will ensure that all activities and duties are carried out in full compliance with regulatory requirements, Barclays Operational Risk Framework and internal Barclays Policies and Standards.
Be recognised as commercially aware and client focused with a track record of driving good commercial and customer solutions to risk issues, exceeding customer/client expectations
Will demonstrate clear capability and a history of influencing senior management in situations where the optimal outcome may not be the preferred commercial outcome
Experience of proactively engaging with senior management, demonstrating an inquiring mind and the courage to follow it through to a sound conclusion
Ensure that all activities and duties are carried out in full compliance with regulatory requirements, Barclays Operational Risk Framework and internal Barclays Policies and Standards.
A sound, relevant and robust knowledge of the business to which they partner which is recognized and valued by the business and can demonstrate a track record of management in the First and Second Line of Defence seeking their counsel and opinion
Clear and deep understanding of Operational Risk Frameworks and their fit within an Enterprise Risk Management Framework with a proven ability of working with senior business leaders to deploy risk frameworks in the business.
Comprehensive appreciation of other risk types and how they impact and relate to Operational Risk.
Strong understanding of industry best practice in respect of risk tools and developments and of the regulatory environment (e.g. Basel 3.1) and be recognised as an authority on best practice.
Understand regulatory requirements for Operational Risk, how the Operational Risk Framework and activities contribute to and influence these requirements and how Operational Risk capital fits within the context of broader capital requirements.
Experience of setting and directing the objectives and responsibilities of the team with demonstrable success in driving the team to deliver desired and timely outcomes to those objectives.
A passion for developing talent, consistently facilitating constructive functional and personal development of others.
Driving effective management action, particularly in the role of the Second Line of Defence influencing the actions of management in the First Line.
Educated to degree level or equivalent or have an appropriate professional qualification.
Excellent command of the English language with strong written and oral communication skills and an ability to communicate and influence effectively at all levels in the business.
