Vacancy Details
Duration: Permanent, Full time Opportunity.
Location: This is an office-based role in The Quadrant: MK and you must live within 75 minutes.
Band & Salary: (Band 5) Fixed starting salary 27,650 with an increase of 2,500 when level 2 competency, which is a professional accreditation with the Chartered Institute of Railway Operator, is completed & passed.
Important information
Network Rail have undertaken an assessment of this role and can confirm that it is ineligible for sponsorship under the Skilled Worker route due to skill level and salary. As such, sponsorship under this route cannot be offered currently. Please do bear this in mind as if you are on a visa currently that will require sponsorship at a later date, this will not be possible. We will continue to review this in line with Home Office guidance.
A probationary period of six months applies. During this time, you will complete supported training and are expected to reach Level 1 competency, meaning you can independently complete key elements of the role and consistently always demonstrate all of the Network Rail behaviours.
Brief Description
As a Timetable Planner, you play a crucial role in shaping the timetable that keeps Britain moving. You'll analyse complex information, solve operational challenges, and help make decisions that directly impact passengers and freight customers across the country.
You will be great at solving complex problems, working as part of a supportive team you will balance the needs of our customers to maximise capacity and performance of the rail network.

What does the average day look like?
As a Timetable Planner, you'll play a key part in keeping Britain moving. From helping commuters get to work on time to ensuring freight reaches its destination smoothly, the timetables you build directly support the reliability and efficiency of the rail network.
You'll work with large sets of timetable data every day, assessing what services can run and balancing several critical factors. This includes following strict safety and scheduling rules, accounting for essential maintenance and improvement works, and finding solutions to complex capacity challenges. You'll also work closely with our customers - explaining options, negotiating the best possible schedules, and helping shape how the network operates.
Training and development
For your first 14-18 weeks, you'll take part in an in-depth training programme designed to give you everything you need to succeed. Our training team and technical experts will guide you through both classroom and on-the-job learning, helping you build confidence with the tools, processes and technical knowledge required. Once you complete your training, you'll gain your level 1 competency which is a professional accreditation with the Chartered Institute of Railway Operator - recognition of the vital contribution you make in this role.
Following your level 1 competency attainment you will continue to develop within role gaining practical experience to demonstrate your planning competence to work towards attaining your level 2 competency a professional accreditation with the Chartered Institute of Railway Operator

Essential Criteria
Good analytical skills
The ability to quickly learn to use sophisticated train planning software
A flair for negotiation and persuasion
Ability to communicate effectively
Ability to engage with customers, and build collaborative relationships with stakeholders
Experience in delivering to agreed timelines and standards
