Full-time over 5 days, 37.5 hours per week including minimum 1 weekend in 4 and flexibility to cover evening events and staff leave.

Florence Arts Centre (FAC) is a participatory community arts hub where everyone can get creative. Within walking distance from Egremont, we comprise studios, performance space, gallery, cafe, shop stocked with work by local makers and a wildlife garden and we host activities for wellbeing, talent development and, most importantly... joy! We are also home to Florence Paintmakers, creating unique, high-quality art materials from natural earth pigments (including Egremont Red from our site) for sale online, on site, and through selected retailers.

Job Purpose



To manage the day-to-day operations and commercial activities of Florence Arts Centre, including managing operational and commercial staff and volunteers, site management and development.

- Deputise for the Director in their absence.

- Drive up visitor numbers and income by optimising commercial activity and events while managing budgets efficiently.

- Work flexibly to provide practical support and cover front of house Coordinator shifts as required.

This is very much a hands-on role operating within a small team and therefore requires a practical, problem-solving approach and flexibility to ensure the centre operates effectively and efficiently at all times.

Main Responsibilities



Commercial Management



Develop and improve commercial management to increase income generation across cafe, shop, performance space events, adult workshops, seasonal events and venue hire. Analyse profits and report on income generation across all commercial activities Manage operational and commercial budgets to drive efficiency and maximise income Manage relationships and stock with artists selling on sale or return in the makers' shop Complete invoicing and payment processing Manage visitor data and marketing analysis to improve learning and operational efficiency

Operational Management



Manage and develop excellent customer care and visitor welcome standards Implement health and safety policies and manage relevant procedures Act as responsible person for fire and first aid when on duty - serve as fire warden and first aider Manage and develop the site including maintenance, servicing, H&S checks, tests and administration, IT systems, alarms, cleaning, licenses, waste management, and utilities Manage contractors and coordinate volunteers to make improvements to the site Manage office functions, developing and maintaining efficient and effective systems including procurement of resources Liaise with venue hirers and complete administrative tasks for venue hire Ensure the venue is clean, tidy, and appropriately set up for activities and events Work with the volunteer garden team to deliver the garden action plan

Staff and Volunteer Management



Line-manage operations and commercial staff (2 coordinators) including conducting staff reviews, setting targets, and overseeing training and development Lead recruitment processes for operational staff when required Manage staff rotas including evenings and holiday coverage Recruit, train, and support volunteers across all areas of operation Maintain volunteer rotas and coordinate volunteer activities Manage applications for staff and volunteer DBS checks

Front of House Cover



Cover key holder and coordinator front of house duties when coordinators are absent, including weekends and evenings (compensated through time off in lieu or additional hours by arrangement with the Director) Maintain operational standards during staff absences Ensure continuity of visitor services and facility operations

General Responsibilities



Deputise for the Director during periods of absence, maintaining organisational continuity and decision-making authority Participate in staff meetings and training/professional development opportunities Support the centre's inclusion values and commitment to diversity Help plan and deliver special events to increase visitors and income as part of the Florence team Undertake other reasonable duties as required by the Director This list of duties is not exhaustive and you will be required to complete any reasonable requests outside of the job description as advised, along with providing cover and support for other team members during holidays, sickness absence, etc.

Person Specification



Essential Requirements



The roleholder must possess a full driving licence and have access to their own vehicle in order to to drive or get to the venue including outside of normal working hours as and when required Excellent organisational and administrative skills Strong interpersonal and communication abilities Experience in customer service or visitor-facing roles Experience in facilities management or similar operational roles Financial management skills including budgeting, stock pricing, and record keeping Understanding of health and safety compliance in public venues Staff management and leadership experience Ability to work independently and use initiative Practical problem-solving abilities Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as required Willingness to undertake fire safety and first aid training

Desirable Requirements



Experience in volunteer coordination and management Previous experience in data collection and analysis Experience working in arts, cultural, or community organisations Knowledge of commercial operations in hospitality or retail Experience with booking systems or scheduling software Understanding of accessibility requirements in public venues Knowledge of facilities maintenance and contractor management Experience in income generation and business development

Working Conditions



Indoor and outdoor environment within an arts centre setting Physical work required including standing, lifting, and setting up furniture and displays Flexible working pattern with regular evening and weekend responsibilities Required to undergo enhanced DBS check due to work with children and adults at risk May include local travel for procurement, contractor meetings, and promotional activities Responsibility for facility security and emergency response procedures This is very much a "hands-on" role operating within a small team and therefore there will be a requirement to undertake whichever tasks are required to ensure the centre operates effectively and efficiently at all times.
