Job Description

The post holder will be expected to undertake in-house training regarding aseptic techniques, opening of surgical packs and to be familiar with "time out" (checking of patients). Following training, the post holder will be working alongside Nurse injectors/Doctors to assist with delivering of Intravitreal injections to patients that require injections when attending clinics. To provide a Technical and clinical service for the injection clinic and the ward at Moorfield's South. Assist in the education and training of Band 2/3 Technicians when needed. Work with all members of the multi-professional team (nursing, medical staff, allied health professionals, support workers and all members of the management team). To support qualified nursing staff in providing high quality individualised care to a define group of service users. Working in a manner that promotes dignity and human rights through the adoption of person-centered care principles. Those areas will be our day surgery, inpatients and pre assessment clinic. To maintain and update relevant knowledge and skills, maintain a professional portfolio and participate in further training as appropriate, in order to enhance quality of care for patients and carers. Will act in accordance with local, hospital and statutory guidelines and policies including health and safety initiatives. Will compile a personal & professional portfolio (in conjunction with the performance management process and the compilation of a Personal Development Plan. Will practice in a cost effective and cost aware manner in the allocation of resources and management of hospital stock. Take all possible precautions to safeguard the welfare and safety of staff, service users, visitors and the public, by implementing all policies related to health, safely, security and risk. Will establish a relationship with a clinical supervisor/ mentor/ preceptor.

Responsible for carrying out clinical ophthalmic practice within the Injection clinic, ensuring that high quality care is delivered at all times when patients attending clinics. To assist Nurse injectors and Doctors in the treatment room for the delivery of intravitreal injections using aseptic techniques. To use certain drops under PGD's and be aware of limitations of own's practice. To work alongside all staff in all areas of the patient pathway based on Duke Elder ward, i.e. outpatient clinic activity, nurse led pre-assessment clinics, surgical day-care and in-patients when needed whilst demonstrating infection control principles. To have attained the competencies such as patient observations (Blood Pressure electronic and manual measurement, TPR,RBS,HbA1c, BMI calculation, ECG, intra ocular measurement using contact and non-contact tonometry such as Icare, vision assessment using LogMar and Snellen test charts in accordance with Trust and National guidelines. Will be responsible for the application of knowledge across the range of ophthalmic work procedures and practices, underpinned by theoretical knowledge and practical experience. At all times treat patients with dignity, care and respect, exercising discretion and maintaining their confidentiality. Responsible for maintaining the equipment, ensuring it is safe to use and assist with data archiving. The successful candidate will be expected to develop clinical skills appropriate to their role and responsibilities within the injection service. To ensure that patients' receive high quality clinical care and a good patient experience, having regard for their customs, religious beliefs and doctrines. To support qualified nurses in the assessment of health needs, planning, delivery and evaluation of care for a number of individuals or groups of patients when attending the injection clinic. To undertake medicine assessment and to follow the Trust's Patient Group Directive for the administration of eye drops for patients undergoing intravitreal injections. Competent in the use of MEH PAS, Open Eyes, EProcurement, and to be able to contact the relevant department whenever any IT issues arises. To provide reassurance, advice and comfort to all patients, many who might have complex emotional, psychological problems and understand how to escalate if necessary. * Maintain departmental stock levels by overseeing the ordering of stores.
