Main duties, tasks & skills required

As an Outpatient Pharmacist, you will lead the delivery of a high-quality, patient-focused pharmacy service at Musgrove Park Hospital. Your responsibilities include ensuring the safe, effective, and cost-efficient use of medicines, providing expert clinical advice to healthcare professionals, and managing the day-to-day operations of the outpatient pharmacy. You will supervise and develop pharmacy staff, maintain compliance with governance and GPhC standards, oversee audits and quality improvement initiatives, and support medicines management and service development. Acting as the Responsible Pharmacist, you will ensure timely supply of medicines, manage controlled drugs in line with legislation, and contribute to policy development and financial performance monitoring.

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Outpatient Pharmacist to lead and deliver a high-quality pharmacy service for outpatients. You will ensure the safe, effective, and cost-efficient use of medicines in line with national and local guidelines, provide expert clinical advice, and manage the day-to-day operations of the outpatient pharmacy. This is a leadership role requiring strong clinical knowledge, organisational skills, and a commitment to continuous improvement.


The Outpatient Pharmacist at Musgrove Park Hospital plays a key leadership role in delivering a high-quality, patient-centred pharmacy service for outpatients. The position is responsible for ensuring the safe, effective, and cost-efficient use of medicines in accordance with national and local guidelines, while providing expert clinical advice to healthcare professionals. This role involves managing the day-to-day operations of the outpatient pharmacy, supervising and developing pharmacy staff, and maintaining compliance with governance frameworks, legislation, and professional standards.


The pharmacist will act as the Responsible Pharmacist, oversee audits and quality improvement initiatives, and contribute to strategic planning and service development. Additional responsibilities include managing controlled drugs and unlicensed medicines, monitoring key performance indicators and financial data, and supporting medicines management initiatives to optimise prescribing practices. The post holder must maintain accurate records, uphold confidentiality, and ensure continuity of service during operational challenges. Candidates are required to hold full registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council and demonstrate strong clinical knowledge, leadership ability, and organisational skills. A commitment to continuous professional development is essential, and an independent prescribing qualification is desirable.

Management experience within the hospital or retail pharmacy sectors. Experience of working effectively within a team. Experience of providing a high-quality pharmacy service. Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of clinical governance. Thorough understanding of the legislation which applies to the receipt, storage and dispensing of medicines. Comprehensive understanding of healthcare practices in primary and secondary care. Thorough understanding of the GPhC requirements for a pharmacist. Maintains a broad knowledge of clinical and pharmacy practice. Demonstrable commitment to CPD.
