Job Title: Paddlesport Senior Instructor
Directly Responsible To: Head of Paddlesport
Directly Responsible For: Deputising for Head of Paddlesport.
Contract: Permanent
Hours: Full-time, 260 days per year
Salary: 41,000
Scope of the Job
The Paddlesport Senior Instructor will be a highly qualified and experienced BCAB (or equivalent) Coach in various disciplines. They will act as an excellent role model within the Centre and wider community, with the capability to course direct a wide range of NGB and skills courses.
The role involves taking responsibility for specific areas of the paddlesport instructional programme, deputising for the Head of Paddlesport in their absence, and driving improvements in values, attitudes, and behaviours across the Centre. While no formal people management responsibilities are required, the postholder will provide supervisory leadership to teams and support colleagues during programme delivery.
The postholder will play a key role in maintaining best practice in safety and quality of delivery, contributing to instructor training, and ensuring innovation and high standards across the paddlesport programme. They will also contribute to Plas y Brenin's wider programme delivery and outreach projects, including Embark expeditions.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Support the Head of Paddlesport and Director of Outdoor Training and Education with the development and management of the paddlesport programme and its related activities.
Ensure Plas y Brenin is recognised as a centre of excellence in training, developing, and assessing leaders, coaches, and instructors in paddlesport, as well as inspiring confidence and skills for independent journeys.
Direct a broad range of paddlesport courses, ensuring delivery of safe, high-quality, and innovative instruction across the paddlesport programme.
Provide exceptional customer service to a wide range of clients with varied abilities, experiences, and backgrounds, and support others to do the same.
Act as a Course Director in a supervisory capacity, directing, mentoring, and supporting colleagues to ensure consistent delivery standards.
Contribute to the training and development of paddlesport instructors, acting as a role model and mentor to build confidence, competence, and professional standards.
Research, evaluate, and share knowledge of current trends and emerging practices in paddlesport coaching and adventure activity delivery, ensuring Plas y Brenin remains a sector leader.
Deputise for the Head of Paddlesport in their absence, supporting team leadership and ensuring continuity of programme quality.
Maintain accurate records of personal details, professional qualifications, accreditations, and NGB approvals.
Work closely with the Stores team to ensure equipment is maintained to the highest standards, reporting needs and improvements where required.
Develop and share resources, course materials, and teaching tools across the paddlesport team.
Contribute to the ongoing review of risk assessments and safety management systems, ensuring compliance with best practice.
Play an active role in quality assurance, reporting to the Head of Paddlesport and Director of Outdoor Activities, supporting continuous development and improvement.
Foster a positive team culture that promotes high performance, inclusion, and professional growth.
Attend relevant meetings and represent Plas y Brenin professionally, including providing consultancy or expertise to NGBs and partners as directed.
Contribute to the delivery of wider programme areas and outreach projects, including Embark expeditions.
Skills, Qualifications, and Experience
Essential
Minimum BCAB (or equivalent) Coach in various disciplines, BCAB Tutor Status in various qualifications.
Significant experience as a paddlesport instructor, including expedition experience.
First Aid qualification.
Safeguarding qualification.
Evidence of ongoing CPD relevant to the role of a paddlesport instructor at a National Centre.
Strong knowledge of safety management procedures, approaches, and standards in paddlesports.
Demonstrable experience of raising standards, delivering results, and introducing innovation.
Operational experience in planning, logistics, and staff deployment to maximise customer experience.
Experience working within a large, multidisciplinary team with supervisory/team leader experience.
Meets DVLA minimum requirements for driving a minibus: held a full driving licence for at least 2 years and aged 21 or over plus D1+E entitlement (for towing trailers, if required for specific activities).
Desirable
Additional outdoor qualifications (e.g., ML, RCI).
Safeguarding Level 3.
Welsh language skills.
