Richard Charlton Solicitors is looking for a paralegal to join their highly committed and specialist mental health team in Folkestone, Kent. The rights of vulnerable clients are at the heart of the firm's work.
The directors at the firm have received recognition and awards over many years and their reported cases include issues of transgender; the legal power and duties of public authorities; the rights of those said to be lacking capacity to return to their home or be restricted; and obtaining the restoration of full means-free legal aid to those detained in care homes under the Mental Capacity Act.
Ideally the applicant will have some knowledge of civil litigation procedures, including in the Court of Protection; however, training and support is available. Work will principally be casework under supervision to progress cases which will include, as appropriate; drafting documents, correspondence and court orders; responding to emails; assisting in the preparation of court bundles; meeting with clients and advocates; and attending court with supervising solicitors and/or counsel. Some adminstrative work will also be required.
Good computer and organisational skills are necessary; including an understanding of Microsoft programmes and an ability to work with the firm's document management systems.
The applicant will need to have a keen interest in vulnerable people with mental health difficulties; and the willingness and ability to communicate effectively and empathetically with clients who may not be articulate and may be distressed at times. A committement to the application of the Human Rights is also required.
We need someone who has law degree, or equivalent qualification; and who preferably has a clean driving licence and their own car. Free parking is available. The post is based in-person at our office in Folkestone.
Salary will be dependent on experience but will be in the range of 24,500 to 27000 pa. Paid leave is 28 days a year exclusive of bank holidays.
