Working closely with GPs, nurses, and other multidisciplinary team members, you will play a key part in delivering efficient, patient-centred care within a forward-thinking general practice setting.

This full-time position (37.5 hours/week) offers the ideal opportunity to apply your advanced paramedic skills in a primary care environment, with scope for professional development and work-life balance. If you thrive in dynamic settings and are committed to improving patient outcomes, we want to hear from you.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

The Paramedic Practitioner will deliver advanced clinical care within their professional scope, with a focus on urgent care, triage, and preventive services. Core responsibilities include:

Patient Assessment and Management

: Perform thorough assessments of patients presenting with acute, undifferentiated illnesses, injuries, or chronic condition exacerbations across all age groups, utilizing history-taking, physical exams, point-of-care testing, and diagnostic interpretation to develop tailored management plans.

Prescribing and Interventions

: As an independent prescriber, initiate treatments, prescribe medications, provide minor procedures, and offer safety-netting advice to manage cases effectively and avoid secondary care referrals where appropriate.

Triage and Service Delivery

: Support the practice's total triage system by handling telephone consultations, face-to-face appointments, e-consultations, and home visits for housebound or vulnerable patients, ensuring prompt and equitable access to care.

Team Collaboration

: Participate in multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings, contribute to care planning for complex cases, and liaise with external services such as community teams, social care, and ambulance services.

Quality Assurance and Development

: Conduct clinical audits, incident reviews, and service evaluations to promote best practices; mentor junior staff, HCPC students, or apprentices, and engage in continuing professional development (CPD).

Administrative Tasks

: Maintain accurate, timely records in the clinical system (e.g., EMIS Web); adhere to safeguarding, infection control, and confidentiality standards.

Practice Contributions

: Assist with health promotion activities, vaccination clinics, and extended hours sessions as needed to meet practice demands.
The role may involve occasional travel for home visits within the local Horley area.

Qualifications and Training

Essential

:

HCPC-registered Paramedic. Postgraduate qualification in Advanced Clinical Practice (Level 7 or equivalent), including advanced assessment and non-medical prescribing. Independent Prescriber status.

Desirable

:

Certifications in minor illness/injury management or primary care competencies.
Experience

Essential

:

Extensive post-registration experience as a paramedic in emergency, urgent, or community care. Proven track record of independent clinical decision-making in high-volume settings.

Desirable

:

Prior experience in general practice, GP out-of-hours, or integrated primary care teams. Involvement in triage, home visiting, or admission avoidance pathways.
Skills and Knowledge

Essential

:

Expert-level skills in emergency assessment, diagnostics, and patient management. Strong interpersonal and communication abilities, including de-escalation and patient education. Competent in clinical IT systems like EMIS or SystmOne. Understanding of primary care pathways, evidence-based guidelines (e.g., NICE), and safeguarding.

Desirable

:

Experience in teaching, auditing, or quality improvement initiatives. Knowledge of local health services and the NHS Long Term Plan.
Personal Attributes

Proactive, resilient, and adaptable, with a compassionate, patient-focused mindset. Excellent time management skills to handle a demanding caseload while maintaining accuracy.
Benefits

Competitive salary (42k-45k) aligned with experience. NHS Pension Scheme enrolment. 25-28 days annual leave plus bank holidays, rising with length of service. Study leave allowance and CPD support to maintain advanced practice credentials. Access to occupational health, counselling services, and flexible/remote working options where feasible. Opportunities for career advancement, including leadership roles within the surgery.
