Purpose




The Pastoral Manager will lead on all aspects of student personal development, behaviour, attendance, and wellbeing. You will manage the delivery of strategic and operational pastoral interventions, line manage the Pastoral Officer, and ensure that safeguarding, behaviour and attendance systems are robust, effective, and compliant.


You will be a designated safeguarding officer and play a key role in liaising with families, external agencies, and staff to create a positive, safe, and inclusive learning environment for all students.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Management




Provide leadership and line management to the Pastoral Officer, overseeing day-to-day pastoral support and ensuring consistency across interventions and student support.


Lead on the strategic development of the schools pastoral provision and ensure alignment with the School Development Plan.


Oversee pastoral data, reporting trends to SLT, and using analysis to improve provision.


Maintain accurate and up-to-date records through DatabridgeMIS, ensuring all behaviour, attendance, and pastoral records are recorded and actioned.


Act as a designated safeguarding officer and lead on complex safeguarding cases under the direction of the DSL.


Co-ordinate and oversee behaviour and attendance monitoring systems and strategies, including Early Help and multi-agency referrals.

Pastoral Oversight & Student Support




Support vulnerable students to overcome barriers to learning through mentoring, coaching, and tailored interventions.


Design and implement effective behaviour and attendance improvement plans.


Lead on the reintegration of students following fixed-term exclusions or long absences, coordinating wraparound support.


Maintain a visible presence around the school and act as a positive role model in behaviour and attitude.


Support student transitions into and out of the school, ensuring a smooth and supportive process.

Family & External Engagement




Liaise with parents and carers to address concerns and support attendance, behaviour, and emotional wellbeing.


Represent the school in key multi-agency meetings including PEPs, TACs, Annual Reviews, attendance panels, and Early Help processes.


Build and maintain strong relationships with local authorities, health professionals, CAMHS, social care, and other external services.


Lead on parent/carer engagement activities linked to pastoral care and wellbeing.

Other Duties


Attend safeguarding, behaviour, and pastoral CPD as required, including TeamTeach and Early Help training.


Contribute to the whole school ethos of inclusion, care, and high expectations.


Deputise for the DSL when appropriate.


Perform other duties commensurate with the role as required by the Head Teacher or SLT.

Essential Qualifications, Skills, and Knowledge




Minimum GCSE Grade 5 or equivalent in English and Maths.


Proven experience in a pastoral or safeguarding role within a SEND or SEMH setting.


Strong understanding of child protection, safeguarding, and statutory responsibilities.


Skilled in managing and analysing pastoral and attendance data (DatabridgeMIS or similar).


Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with a child-centred approach.


Able to manage complex and sensitive situations with professionalism and care.


Experience in leading or mentoring staff or teams is highly desirable.

Desirable




Relevant professional pastoral qualifications (e.g., Level 3/4 in Safeguarding, Social Work, Youth Work, etc.).


Relevant professional management qualifications


Previous line management experience.


Understanding of trauma-informed practice and attachment needs.


Knowledge of current legislation and best practice in SEND, inclusion, and safeguarding.
