This is a unique opportunity to be part of a small but high-achieving patent team who work on a variety of differing patent projects. With a lot of interaction required with different internal team this is an interactive position with individual tasks and responsibilities. The ideal candidate will have experience in patent searching and analysis ideally coupled with practical experience of IP searching software. The role directly reports to the Senior Patent Engineer.

What you\xe2\x80\x99ll be doing:

  • Develop conduct and analyse search strategies/results for a variety of landscapes clearance patentability and validity searches for business management IP colleagues and technology scouting purposes.
  • Work alongside third-party search companies to perform landscapes whitespace analyses and a variety of other IP searches.
  • Report search results and provide deliverables in the form of landscapes patent maps and charts formally and informally internally and to external stakeholders.
  • Maintain IP department software licenses and updates. Serve as the primary liaison between the IP team and external providers of search tools and databases organising relevant training for the IP team.
  • Maintain proficiency with commercial patent searching databases and other proprietary databases of technical publications.
  • Arrange IP alerts and analyse competitor IP developments and report findings internally.
  • Organise large IP projects involving technical teams business management and IP colleagues involving top level coordination and communication skills.
  • Support Patent Engineers in the creation and execution of IP strategies.
  • Provide technical support to the Patent Engineers as required regarding patent prosecution IP search results and analysing prior art documents.
  • Guide projects through established project stage gate process from an IP perspective.
  • Perform some IP Administrator related duties to provide cover for when the IP Administrator is absent.
  • Record minutes of IP related company meetings and promptly communicate these to all relevant stakeholders.
  • Provide process improvements where applicable.
  • Provide support to management for various IP-related projects and other ad-hoc duties as requested.
  • Understand and abide by the health safety and environmental policies and procedures in place.
  • To ensure that the highest standards of compliance are maintained and supported.
What experience you will need to apply:
  • BSc in Chemistry or Biochemistry (or similar) with an MSc in Intellectual Property and ideally experience working in a corporate IP team as a Patent Analyst or Patent Agent. Alternatively a PhD in Chemistry or Biochemistry or equivalent work experience with a relevant technical background involving some awareness of patents.
  • Technical background in either Chemistry or Biochemistry.
  • Experience in patent searching including landscaping patentability freedom to operate searches and analysis would be preferred with the ability to synthesise IP information with market knowledge to provide sound recommendations to management and business colleagues.
  • An understanding of the difference between freedom-to-operate patentability and invalidity searches how are they different under what circumstances each is performed and how to tailor the search appropriately.
  • Experience with major patent related databases and performing patent searches would be preferred for example Derwent Innovation PatentSight STN Orbit or a similar system.
  • Strong analytical skills and an ability to synthesize data regarding complex technologies IP laws and market environment.
  • Ability to communicate IP analysis and conclusions in a clear and concise manner to internal stakeholders including senior management.
  • Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving abilities with an independent proactive outlook. Strong time-management and prioritising skills including managing client and management expectations.
  • The ability to work to challenging deadlines in a dynamic environment with changing priorities whilst paying meticulous attention to detail.
  • Fluency in English is essential (written and verbal) with strong abilities related to proofreading work products.
  • Competent and able with the willingness to take on additional responsibility and show strong potential for future progression.
  • Good knowledge of standard computer programs (for example MS Word Excel PowerPoint).
