Patient Safety Partner Volunteer Role

Royal Tunbridge Wells, ENG, GB, United Kingdom

Job Description

About West Kent Primary Care

West Kent Primary Care is a GP Federation supporting primary care across Maidstone, Malling, Tunbridge Wells, Tonbridge, Sevenoaks and The Weald.

We represent all the GP practices in the West Kent Health and Care Partnership area. We are a community interest company with our member GP practices being the shareholders with the ethos of a 'not for profit' organisation. Our aim is to provide a platform to enable us to work together to strengthen Primary Care in our area.

This collective strength will allow us to share responsibility for developing and delivering high quality, patient focused services for our local communities while ensuring our member GP practices remain sustainable and able to build and develop for the future.

Job Overview

The way the NHS understands and learns from incidents is changing. The Patient Safety Partner Role (PSP) is a new and evolving role, developed by NHS England to help improve patient involvement in safety across healthcare in the UK. This is part of the new Patient Safety Incident Response Framework (PSIRF). The PSP will work closely with our senior management and governance team whose job is to keep patients safe. They will act as the patient voice in meetings with senior leaders and help to develop services aimed at improving the patient experience.

The PSP must advocate for the needs of service users, patients, carers, and families in all meetings and forums they attend, championing a diversity of perspectives. They must strictly adhere to relevant policies and maintain confidentiality in all discussions. The total time commitment initially for the PSP is expected to be four hours per month. This includes preparation for and attendance at group meetings. Attendance at the relevant meetings will mostly be held remotely via teams but some meetings will occur face to face.

Responsibilities

1. Safety improvement programme support and strategic direction.
Being involved in two of our key governance meetings (Clinical Governance and Integrated Governance Committee). This will include attending two separate monthly meetings, reading documents in advance and providing your feedback.

Contribute to the design of improvement plans and support the monitoring of implementations.

With particular focus on improving how we involve patients, their families and carers in our incident investigation processes.

2. Provide ad hoc input to other safety improvement priorities as required, subject to availability and interest (for example hand hygiene and personal protective equipment (PPE) improvement, and end of life care improvement).

3. Attend Executive Management Board meetings on an ad hoc basis, alongside colleagues to present progress on areas to which you have contributed.

4. Be a member of interview panels to advise on the recruitment for key safety related roles, including other PSPs, and support successful candidates' induction (subject to availability).

5. Be a member of the People's Network to help ensure safety improvement is an active part of the discussions. Support for implementation of the national framework for involving patients in patient safety.

6. Work with colleagues to support the identification of new roles and tasks for PSPs, and the development of new task profiles.

7. Work with colleagues and other healthcare professionals from different organisations to support the regular review of their PSP role profile within associated West Kent Primary Care PSIRF documents.

8. Contribute to the design of the implementation plan for Part A of the framework (Involving patients in their own safety), specifically in supporting the development of engaging, patient-centred information campaigns.
