We have an exciting opportunity for a Payroll Team Manager in our Steyning office. This is an opportunity for you to join our payroll team on a 12-month fixed term contract to cover maternity leave.
Key responsibilities of a
Payroll Team Manager
will include:
Oversee the end-to-end payroll function, ensuring accurate and timely processing on a monthly basis
Support and guide the Payroll Supervisor in their new role, ensuring effective onboarding and day-to-day leadership of the team of eight Payroll Client Managers
Lead and facilitate monthly payroll team meetings and organise relevant training sessions to support team development and performance
Manage the annual year-end payroll process, including:
Coordinating year-end training and legislative updates
Developing and documenting year-end procedures and client communications
Delivering training and guidance to the team
Represent the payroll department in monthly Head of Department meetings with directors, providing updates on team performance, key challenges, and upcoming changes
Drive continuous improvement of payroll processes to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and compliance
Act as the primary point of contact for internal stakeholders (HR, Finance, and senior leadership) on all payroll-related matters
Participate in payroll focus groups across the wider group to discuss best practices and upcoming changes
Oversee the implementation and ongoing management of payroll systems, including coordination with IT on system updates or improvements
Conduct annual performance appraisals with the Payroll Supervisor for the Payroll Client Managers
Support the Payroll Supervisor in resolving complex payroll queries and escalations with professionalism and accuracy
Prepare payroll reports and ad hoc analysis for senior management as required
Complete the monthly client billing process and manage internal payroll recharge procedures
About you
We are looking for candidates with the following skills and experience:
Proven experience in managing a payroll function, ideally within a multi-client or complex payroll environment
Strong knowledge of UK payroll legislation, statutory requirements, auto-enrolment & UK payrolls with overseas employers
Knowledge of year-end processes and experience coordinating payroll legislative updates and team training
Experience leading and developing teams, with a focus on coaching, performance management, and fostering a positive working culture
Confident communicator, able to effectively liaise with stakeholders at all levels including directors, HR, Finance, and IT
CIPP qualifications (or working towards) is desirable
Ideally experienced using IRIS Payroll Professional & Payrite or has the confidence and ability to learn new payroll software efficiently
Strong communication skills and a client-focused approach
Supervisory/team leadership experience required
