Job Description

Join Our Team as a Payroll Team Manager - Are You Our Next Superstar?

Are you ready to step into a true management role? We're looking for a confident, people-first manager to join our growing team at Payroll Sorted as a

Payroll Team Manager

. This is more than a coordination role, you'll be leading a high-performing team of payroll processors, owning their performance, and helping shape the future of payroll delivery.

About Payroll Sorted:

We're a fast-growing outsourced payroll provider that exclusively supports accountants and their clients. We've built our business around a single mission: making payroll painless for UK accountants. We've grown fast and built a reputation for service excellence, automation, and no-nonsense delivery.

We're now rolling out our next generation of leadership roles and we're looking for an ambitious, capable, people-focused leader to join us as a Payroll Team Manager.

This role isn't for someone looking to move from processing to leadership. It's for someone who already

has experience managing people

, running structured daily check-ins, training team members, allocating work, having the tough conversations, and ultimately

owning team output and culture.

If you've been a team leader or line manager in a payroll or bureau environment and you're ready to take the next step into full department ownership this is the one for you.

About the Role:

You'll manage a team of 3-5 payroll processors and related support roles, including performance, workflow, development, quality, and communication. You'll be expected to:

Lead daily team huddles

and manage real-time scheduling and resource planning

Coach and support

your team to consistently hit service and quality standards

Train and develop

junior team members to take on new responsibilities

Spot performance gaps early

, reset expectations, and follow through

Own all aspects

of team performance reporting, escalation, and delivery

Support your team members

but hold the line on quality and consistency
This is a

real leadership role

with full autonomy. You'll still process payrolls yourself, mainly the larger or more complex ones but your

primary purpose is team performance.

What We're Looking For:

You must:

Have demonstrable team leadership experience

-- you've directly supervised a team, delegated workload, and been the go-to person for performance conversations.

Have trained team members

-- whether onboarding new starters or upskilling junior staff, you've helped people grow.

Be confident handling tough conversations

-- you're not afraid to challenge underperformance or provide honest feedback.

Have managed performance issues

-- you've led people through coaching plans or formal performance improvement steps. Be someone who thinks like a manager, not a task-doer. Be able to prioritise, plan, and act proactively without being told.

Payroll Know-It-All (In the Best Way)

: Whether it's onboarding a new client, navigating CIS, or troubleshooting a tricky pension situation, you've been there, done that, and know exactly what's needed.
If you've only ever been responsible for your own work this role is

not for you

. We're looking for someone who has been in the hot seat for others' success (and failure), and who thrives on driving standards.

What Success Looks Like:

Your team hits their daily and monthly targets Embraces our proactive, high-standards culture, consistently communicating early, taking ownership of challenges, and doing what's right to protect service quality and partner trust. You're on top of holiday planning, workloads, and resourcing Your team members are learning, improving, and performing You lead with confidence, communicate clearly, and act fast

What's in It for You?

Genuine Leadership Role:

This isn't "payroll processing with a fancy title." You'll lead a team, make decisions, own outcomes, and be the go-to for all performance matters.

Remote Working:

Work from anywhere in the UK, with full flexibility and autonomy over your day. We care about results, not clock-watching.

Career Progression:

We're building a structure designed to scale. Show us what you can do, and you'll have opportunities to move up fast.

Clear Success Framework:

You'll be set up for success with monthly milestones, coaching support, and a clear view of what great looks like in the role.

Direct Access to Leadership:

You'll work closely with the business owners and get support when you need it. No red tape. No middle management layers

Who Should Apply?

This role is for someone who:

Thrives in a high-energy, fast-paced environment. Takes pride in their work and strives for excellence every day. Who is data driven using data to inform decisions, and back up your work with evidence. Is ready to make a real impact and take their career to the next level.
Experience is non-negotiable--you

must

have worked as the lead at an Accountancy Practice or within a Payroll Bureau. We need someone who has thrived in the fast-paced world of a multi-client environment, where juggling deadlines, managing complexities, and delivering exceptional service are just part of the job -- your payroll and pension technical skills need to be top-notch.

It would be a massive bonus if you're already a BrightPay user, as it's our payroll software of choice. While it's not a deal-breaker if you haven't used it, familiarity with BrightPay would definitely give you a head start and make settling in even smoother
