We are currently recruiting for a full time (37.5 hours per week) Performing Arts Technician to join our Technical Resources department on a permanent basis. Please note that hours of work will include weekend and evenings.

Principal Purpose of Post




The Performing Arts Technician is responsible to the Senior Performing Arts Technician for technical services relating to productions, performances and live events in the centre, and for the maintenance and technical servicing of MAC's performing arts spaces.

Key Responsibilities




The technical duties of this post include the entire spectrum of practical theatre craft. It includes a variety of art and entertainment forms, conferences, screenings, and other activities at MAC in the centre's performance spaces and occasionally outside MAC. In particular, it involves work with:

Stage scenery, equipment and design Lighting and lighting design Sound and sound design Audio visual equipment

Technical Duties



Maintain high production values, ensure the highest standards of presentation for all MAC's work. Carry out get ins and get outs for touring productions. Operate lighting, sound and AV for live events. Rig and focus lighting, sound and AV, accurately interpret plans and tech specs. Construct sets and carry out basic carpentry. Realise visiting designer's technical designs; provide events without an external designer with appropriate lighting, sound and staging. Act as Duty Technician for performances and events, liaising with front of house teams. Ensure that the centre works as an effective and welcoming base for performing arts activities and that facilities and services are appropriately provided. Identify technical needs for events, liaise with the Senior Performing Arts Technician to ensure those needs are met appropriately. On occasions to provide technical assistance on behalf of MAC to external agencies.

Health and Safety



Follow established safe working practices in the pursuance of duties and adhere to MAC's risk assessments and Health and Safety policy. Ensure that visiting companies, artists, and technicians under the post holder's support and supervision follow established safe working practices in the pursuance of duties and adhere to MAC's risk assessments and Health and Safety policy. Report any incidents or concerns in line with MAC's procedures. Understand and implement risk assessments for spaces and activities, contribute to writing risk assessments.

Equipment Maintenance



Annual maintenance of performance spaces, PAT testing and thoroughly cleaning equipment. Maintain and repair the equipment within the department's control or recommend when outside assistance may be required. Routine maintenance of the dance and music studios and conference rooms, ensuring the sound and AV systems are functioning effectively and instruments are in good order. Keep stage, studio and storage spaces clean and tidy, make sure MAC provides a safe and professional working environment.

Working with others



Maintain a professional and friendly attitude in an often-pressured environment. Liaise with MAC's producers and Event Sales Team to ensure the needs of visiting companies are met. Contribute to the recruitment, induction and training of other technicians and work placements. Work alongside the other technical teams at MAC, sharing knowledge and expertise. Supervise Technical Assistants and freelance staff. On occasion deputise for the Senior Performing Arts Technician.

Stage Management



Liaise with the artistic team to ensure effective communication and realisation of co-productions. Prepare technical scripts for show operation. Assist in the provision of effective production management for 'in house' productions and co-productions with external companies / artists. In conjunction with the Head of Technical Resources order and hire materials, distributing as necessary and keeping accurate records. Arrange and supervise any transport and storage necessary for productions.

General



To participate in training and development activities as required. Implement MAC's Environmental Policy and consider how this role can contribute to MAC's sustainability goals. Undertake any other duties which may be required from this post.

Person Specification




A person specification describes the areas of knowledge, skills and experience a person should possess in order to take up the post.

Experience



Essential



At least 2 years as a Performing Arts Technician in a similar venue. Ability to lift and carry awkward and/or heavy loads. Working at height. Good communication skills. Ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team.

Desirable



Touring productions. Working with emerging artists and young people. Current driving licence.

Specific Knowledge



Essential



Current theatre equipment & processes.

Desirable



Audio-visual equipment, including digital media. Current Health & Safety (including risk assessments).

Practical Skills



Essential



Lighting and/or Sound design. Lighting rigging and operation. Sound rigging and operation. Set construction/ basic carpentry. Ability to fault-find damaged stock, identify and execute solutions for technical equipment. Relevant administrative skills. Basic computer skills.

Desirable



Production management skills. Hemp Flying. Stage management. IPAF / MEWP training. City & Guilds Electrical qualification. ETC EOS Lighting consoles and software.
