Key Responsibilities
A. Clinical & Professional Leadership (Pharmacist Duties)
Dispensing & Patient Safety:
Act as the
Responsible Pharmacist
(RP), ensuring the accurate, safe, and legal dispensing of all prescriptions (NHS and private), adhering to the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) standards and UK legislation.
NHS Service Delivery:
Oversee, deliver, and actively promote the full range of contracted
NHS services
, including but not limited to:
Essential Services:
Dispensing, Repeat Dispensing, Disposal of Unwanted Medicines, Signposting, Public Health Promotion.
Advanced Services:
New Medicine Service (NMS)
,
Medicine Use Reviews (MURs)
(if still commissioned),
Community Pharmacist Consultation Service (CPCS)
, and
Flu/COVID-19 Vaccination Service
.
Enhanced Services:
Minor Ailments Schemes, Pharmacy First, Travel Health, and Smoking Cessation.
Clinical Governance:
Maintain a robust clinical governance framework, including managing and investigating clinical incidents, near misses, and patient complaints, implementing corrective actions, and updating Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Medicines Management:
Provide expert, evidence-based advice on medicines, drug interactions, side effects, and adherence to patients and other healthcare professionals (GPs, Nurses, etc.).
Audit & Reporting:
Lead and participate in regular internal and external audits (e.g., Clinical Governance, GPhC inspections) and ensure timely and accurate claiming for all NHS and private services.
B. Operational & Business Management (Manager Duties)
Team Leadership & Development:
Recruit, train, supervise, and conduct performance reviews for the entire pharmacy team (Technicians, Dispensers, Counter Assistants), promoting a culture of continuous professional development and high-quality customer care.
Regulatory Compliance:
Ensure the pharmacy premises and all staff activities comply with the GPhC Standards, the Medicines Act, NHS Contractual Framework, and all relevant Health & Safety and Data Protection (GDPR) regulations.
Financial & KPI Management:
Be accountable for the achievement of key performance indicators (KPIs), including professional service targets (e.g., NMS/CPCS numbers), retail sales, stock management, and cost control.
Stock Control & Procurement:
Oversee the efficient and ethical procurement, storage, and management of all medicines and healthcare products, minimising waste and preventing stock-outs.
Relationship Management:
Build and maintain strong, collaborative relationships with key external stakeholders, including local GP practices, Primary Care Networks (PCNs), the NHS team, and Local Pharmaceutical Committees (LPCs).
Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Experience
Qualifications:
Must be a fully qualified Pharmacist and registered with the
General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)
.
Experience:
Proven post-registration experience, preferably in a community pharmacy setting, with direct experience in delivering and managing NHS Essential, Advanced, and Enhanced services.
Management Skills:
Demonstrable leadership, coaching, and people management skills, with the ability to motivate a diverse team.
Communication:
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey complex clinical information clearly and sensitively to patients and staff.
Organisational Skills:
High level of self-motivation, initiative, and the ability to plan, prioritise, and manage a broad range of complex activities.
Clinical Acumen:
Strong clinical decision-making skills and a commitment to Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) Examples
Achievement of targets for NHS Advanced Services (e.g., NMS completions, CPCS referrals).
Maintenance of GPhC and NHS contractual compliance with zero major findings on inspection.
Staff engagement, retention, and training compliance.
Effective management of dispensing errors and near misses (low incident rates).
Delivery of agreed financial and operational targets.
