We are seeking a skilled and compassionate Phlebotomist to join our friendly and supportive primary care team at Willington Surgery. The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting the clinical team by collecting blood and urine specimens, ensuring patient comfort and safety, and helping maintain accurate medical records. Youll be working in a busy but rewarding practice environment, serving a population of approximately 10,500 patients, with a strong GP partnership and a commitment to high-quality patient care.
Main Responsibilities
Prioritise and plan daily activities based on the urgency of sample requests and rotas.
Accurately identify patients and confirm personal details using approved documentation.
Determine the appropriate phlebotomy method (e.g. venepuncture, skin puncture) based on patient age, health, and condition.
Reassure patients, help them relax, and ensure a positive and comfortable experience.
Locate suitable veins and collect samples using sterile techniques and equipment.
Label all samples correctly and deliver them promptly for testing.
Perform urine dipstick testing in line with protocol.
Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records on clinical systems (SystmOne).
Respond to patient queries in a professional manner and provide appropriate signposting.
Adhere to infection control procedures, health and safety regulations, and confidentiality policies at all times.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Essential:
Diploma in Phlebotomy or evidence of 12 months' on-the-job training.
Proven experience in venepuncture and phlebotomy techniques.
Strong understanding of patient identification and sample labelling protocols.
Familiarity with legal and clinical requirements for handling samples and medical equipment.
Ability to remain calm, professional, and reassuring with patients of all ages.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
High attention to detail and accuracy.
Basic IT skills with experience using clinical systems (SystmOne desirable).
Commitment to confidentiality and data protection standards.
Desirable:
Experience working in a GP surgery or community healthcare setting.
Knowledge of primary care workflows and practice-based protocols.
