We have a position for a PMLD Teaching Assistant to work in a specialist unit with young people with PMLD.

The role is to support the qualified teacher in the classroom in delivering a sensory curriculum based on the needs of the pupil. Class sizes are usually around 5-7 pupils with 5 TAs and a nurse if required. . There is a team of support staff and external professionals supporting the pupils and families.

Depending on your experience you could be working with primary or secondary aged pupils, we will place you in an environment that you are most effective.

The role

To create a safe and nurturing classroom environment for pupils with PMLD. To communicate effectively with the staffing team and the pupils to create a calm and caring learning environment. Support the Teacher in delivering a sensory curriculum ,personalised for each pupil, you may be expected to fill in reading and learning journals when required. Support with additional sessions such as Physiotherapy, Swimming, Sensory Play. You may use Makaton and pictures for communication. Help with snack times and lunchtimes, some pupil will be fed with specialist feeding equipment. Personal care may be required as part of the role and hoisting when required.
The ideal applicant

Will have either work experience or personal experience with young people or adults with PMLD. Will be kind, caring and patient Reliable Will be adaptable Ideally a qualification in care, childcare qualification or a degree - however this is not a must
School hours are 8.30 - 3.30 - the position is a full time position with an immediate start - we will also consider part time people for the role.

Safeguarding children is an integral part of what we do and we have a stringent safer recruitment process. we undertake checks on all the candidates we work with. As such we require a current Enhanced DBS Disclosure for everyone working in Schools. If you do not have a subscription to the DBS Update Service, you may be required to complete a new DBS application as part of the registration process. If you take a temporary role with Sense Education you will be paid on a weekly basis. All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position but long term. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available.
