Job Description

Political Assistant

-----------------------

Job description

We have an excellent opportunity for a Political Assistant to provide research, communications and policy development advice to the members of a political group and support them in their responsibilities.

We need someone with relevant qualifications and experience of working in a political environment. You will have detailed knowledge of the political environment in South Cambridgeshire and Cambridge and Peterborough as a whole, including key policy issues. You will also need superb writing skills including experience of drafting briefing notes, reports and speeches.

The role sits within Democratic Services and will work closely with the Conservative Group Leader and their Group. The successful candidate will also be working very closely with our Communication team colleagues.

Working closely with the Group Leader, you will provide research, communications and policy development advice to the Conservative Group. You will deal with a wide range of issues across all policy areas of the council's services, partnerships, projects and local and national policy, to ensure that the group is supported to operate effectively.

Strong networking skills are essential to enable you to play a central part in the effective preparation and delivery of the Conservative Group's future political strategy, alongside acute political judgement, the ability to analyse data quickly, effective writing skills and good IT skills.

We know how important it is to find a job where you feel valued and have the flexibility to achieve a good work / life balance. With that in mind, we have adopted a hybrid, flexible approach. We work in the best place for the job rather than having hard and fast rules about being in the office five days a week. As a result, this role will see you given the true flexibility to work from home and one of our offices as required. There are many more benefits to working for the Council too, not least our structured pay scales, secure, generous pension and flexible hours.

South Cambridgeshire District Council is a four-day week employer. We expect our colleagues to get 100% of their work done, in around 85% of their contracted hours, for 100% of their pay. All Council staff will be able to opt-in to this way of working under a Productivity Policy. We are a four-day week employer as it helps us attract and keep talented colleagues and improves services by reducing our reliance on costly agency workers. It also supports improved health and wellbeing.

For more information about this opportunity please contact Cllr Heather Williams (Group Leader) on 07885 774775.

Closing date: 9am Friday 15 August 2025

Interview date: Thursday 21st and Friday 22nd August 2025
