What you'll be doing:
As part of the Operations Team, the Portable Appliance Tester and Facilities Mentor plays a critical role in ensuring electrical items, equipment and donated goods are safe, compliant and ready for retail sale. A major focus of this role is achieving PAT-testing output targets and supporting Mustard Tree's retail income KPIs by maximising the number of saleable electrical goods and recycling responsibly items that cannot be gifted or re sold.
You will also support the Facilities Manager with day-to-day maintenance tasks, and equipment checks, while mentoring Freedom Volunteers to build their skills, confidence and work readiness. This is a practical, KPI-driven role that combines technical testing standards with coaching, teamwork and community engagement

Key Responsibilities
1. PAT Testing, Electrical Preparation & Retail Income
Carry out PAT testing on all donated electrical goods in line with trading standards legislation, following all Mustard Tree procedures including maintaining accurate records of reporting.
Work toward agreed PAT-testing KPIs, including throughput, accuracy rates and the percentage of items made retail-ready.
Identify, refurbish and prepare electrical items and white goods for sale, ensuring maximum conversion of donations into income-generating products.
Mentor and supervise Freedom Volunteers training in PAT testing, cleaning, preparation and safe handling of electrical items.
2. Facilities & Maintenance Operations
Support the Facilities Manager with planned and reactive maintenance tasks across all Mustard Tree sites, including assisting with contractor liaison, cleaners, trades and service providers.
Conduct routine building, equipment and H&S checks, ensuring issues are reported and resolved promptly. Ensure all hubs remain clean, safe and welcoming for staff, volunteers and customers.
3. Volunteer Training & Mentoring
Provide hands-on coaching and daily mentoring to Freedom Volunteers involved in PAT testing, electrical preparation and facilities tasks.
Deliver structured on-the-job training, task demonstrations and team-based activities. Help volunteers complete training workbooks, online modules and safe-working practices.
Maintain an open, supportive, non-judgmental approach when working with people at different stages of their development.
4. Health, Safety & Compliance
Follow all Health & Safety policies, including PPE standards, safe manual handling and incident reporting.
Support correct storage, labelling and monitoring of COSHH materials. Complete all documentation, testing logs and administrative tasks accurately within agreed timescales.
5. General Duties
Provide cover and practical support across other departments as required.
Act as a positive ambassador for Mustard Tree and model organisational values.
Contribute to environmentally responsible practices, including recycling, correct disposal of electrical waste and a paper-lite working approach.
Undertake any additional duties relevant to the role or as required by the charity.
What we're looking for: Person Specification
Essential
Recent Experience in PAT testing or the willingness to be trained.
Understanding basic Health & Safety requirements, including manual handling, COSHH and PPE.
Practical experience in maintenance, facilities support or a hands-on operational role.
Confidence working with electrical goods, tools and manual heavy lifting tasks.
Strong communication skills, with the ability to mentor, support and motivate volunteers in a positive and empowering way.
Excellent organisation, time-management and attention to detail.
Proficient in completing documentation, checklists and compliance paperwork both electronically and manually.
Ability to work both independently and as part of a fast-paced team.
Desirable
In-Service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment certificate.
Experience working in a charity, community or volunteer-led organisation.
Experience supporting vulnerable adults or people facing barriers to employment.
Full clean UK driving license.
Skills in appliance repair, refurbishment or electrical product preparation.
