About the team:



The prime function of the Veterinary Services Group (SRUCVSG) is to provide a laboratory diagnostic and consultancy service to veterinary surgeons in practice in Scotland. SRUC Veterinary Services also provides formal sheep and cattle disease control and accreditation schemes. In addition, there are businesses dealing with companion animal clinical pathology (Capital Diagnostics) and analytical testing of soils, plants and animal feedstuffs.

SRUCVSG operates through a network of eight centres strategically sited at Edinburgh and St Boswells in the South East, Ayr and Dumfries in the South West, Inverness and Thurso in the Highlands, Perth and Aberdeen in the North East. By maintaining a presence throughout Scotland, SRUCVSG is able to fulfil a role in National Disease Surveillance and to provide information on national trends in animal disease. This information is added to that collected by the Animal and Plant Health Agency to provide animal disease surveillance data for Great Britain.

The centres at Aberdeen, Dumfries, St Boswells and Thurso are equipped to carry out post-mortem (PM) examinations with some further limited testing. These centres have between 2 to 4 veterinary surgeons with support staff as required. In addition, SRUCVSG has a Central Laboratory in Edinburgh with a dedicated staff competent in the disciplines of microbiology, serology, molecular biology, biochemistry, histopathology and analytical chemistry. It is here that the majority of analyses from other PM centres are carried out. SRUCVSG has access to a wide range of expertise on other aspects of animal husbandry, nutrition, housing and welfare throughout SRUC.

About the opportunity:



The successful candidates will be part of the Veterinary Services group. The purpose of this role is to provide post-mortem room and scientific support to veterinary staff. Areas of activity include support of the duty vet in the PM room and processing of diagnostic samples from PM examinations and clinical pathology submissions. There is also a requirement for QA activities within the centre.

Duties Include:

Work in an environment that is governed by the ISO17025 standard. Process samples with regard to Health & Safety and adhering to SOPs . Be responsible for monitoring the performance of equipment within the laboratory on a daily basis and reporting to the Line Manager. Be responsible for designated housekeeping duties to ensure integrity of results - reporting to the Line Manager. Participate in appropriate IQA/EQA to maintain competency.

Minimum qualifications and experience:



The successful candidate will be educated to a minimum of SCQF Level 5, with a minimum of 4 standard grades (or equivalent) including English, Mathematics and a Science subject. Clean UK Driving Licence required as travel to remote areas not covered by public transport may occasionally be required
