AECOM is looking for Principal Ecologist to join our vibrant Northwest England ecology team.

This role can be hybrid based, working at one of the following home offices - Edinburgh, Glasgow, Manchester, Newcastle and depending on the location and skillset and season you could be working on Advanced Bat Survey Techniques, be part of the our vibrant Biodiversity Net Gain team and using innovative techniques for species surveys and data capture.

As a Principal Ecologist the role will require you to:

  • Lead and support the preparation of high quality and commercially astute bids and tenders for ecological services, notably in the power, infrastructure and water sectors;
  • Plan, schedule and organise all phases of ecological project work, ensuring necessary resources, budgets and controls are in place to meet both programme and budget requirements;
  • Lead and support delivery of ecological consultancy and advisory services to both internal and external clients;
  • Support development of technically robust and pragmatic solutions to complex ecological issues;
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with other members of the ecology team, within projects and with clients by telephone, electronically and in both Teams and face to face meetings;
  • Lead and support production of ecology chapters for environmental statements and protected species licence applications;
  • Author or technically check project deliverables to ensure high quality outputs;
  • Support the continued development of our technical capabilities and reach;
  • Lead and support specific tasks, innovation or sector engagement; and
  • Support your line manager with maintaining performance and skill sets as well as in collecting and disseminating key business messages and metrics.

The person we are looking for should be able to demonstrate:
  • Proven track record of leading the planning and delivery of work in the ecology sector;
  • Well-developed understanding of UK and Irish wildlife conservation or in relation to a least one major habitat type or species;
  • Commitment to innovation and continuing professional development;
  • Excellent field skills in at least one specialist area;
  • A proactive and careful approach to Health and Safety;
  • Positive behaviours and values with respect to client care, pragmatic decision making and building working relationships, including as a team player;
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written;
  • Positive outlook with a strong sense of ownership in what they do;
  • Professional, organised and thorough approach to work with a keen eye for detail;
  • A full driving licence and willingness to visit other locations on company business.
  • The right to work in the UK;
Qualifications

The person we are looking will ideally have:
  • 1st degree (or equivalent) in Ecology or a related subject with a strong ecological component;
  • Postgraduate qualification in relevant subject;
  • Project and line management experience and skills;
  • Strong track record of work winning;
  • Protected species licences, especially bats; and
  • Membership or evidence of working towards full membership of an appropriate professional institution.
