Our Opportunity




Thales is the UK's leading sonar company and the General Sonar Studies team delivers low TRL and study activities to external and internal customers. General Sonar Studies are central to the development and procurement of concepts, capabilities and solutions to anticipate and address the most challenging customer requirements.

Role and responsibility



You will be responsible for applying detailed mathematical and analytical skills and expertise in support of sonar and related subjects, study contracts and self-funded research and development activities providing advice and progress reports to management as required on technical aspects and produce reports, proposals and papers for technical and scientific conferences.


You will also be responsible for observing and adopting appropriate codes of practice and system engineering, algorithm or modelling and simulation development processes as necessary.

Work as part of the senior technical team to set the direction for future development including building links to wider Thales teams (within export/security limits), academic partners and collaborators (from SMEs to larger partners). Lead innovation activities in delegated areas to develop concepts, solutions and ideas to feed into Thales UK's growing research & development programme. Technically lead the production and review of reports, presentations and scientific papers to demonstrate and promote new innovation internally and externally. Undertake a wide variety of tasks, including the development of sonar processing algorithms, development of AI solutions, autonomy, UW Communications, data fusion and tracking algorithms as well as research studies, performance prediction/modelling/synthetic environments and trials planning/execution/analysis. Technically lead and contribute to specific tasks of a detailed mathematical or analytical research nature associated with the development of signal & data processing algorithms.

About You:



You will ideally be qualified to PHD Mathematical or relevant scientific, engineering or computing with an MSc in Maths with significant Algorithm development experience - a strong background in statistical and stochastic processes and/or linear algebra is desirable. You will enjoy working with algorithms and/or modelling together with being innovative, curious and being able to think outside the box Previous experience deploying problem solving capability and the ability to pro-actively work alone or as part of a small team is essential. Familiarity with a software language such as C/C++ and an understanding of object oriented principles is an advantage

Security Clearance statement



Due to the nature of the work that we do at Thales, many of our roles are subject to security restrictions. This role requires you to be a UK National and achieve Security Clearance (SC) without any caveats. It would be advantageous if currently held, however, if not currently held, it is a requirement that the successful applicant undergo, achieve, and maintain SC Clearance prior to commencing employment. If approved by the MOD, a dual national from a Non-ITAR country may be considered. Please visit the UKSV website for further guidance. To be eligible for full SC, you generally need to have resided in the UK for the last 5 years. In some circumstances, a minimum of 3 years' residence in the UK over the last 5 years may be accepted, with additional overseas checks.
