We are looking for a highly skilled Principal Primary Design Engineer. You will lead the technical delivery Real Time System (RTS) solutions for Distribution substation projects, ranging from 11kV to 132kV.
This is a senior role that is critical in supporting the engineering team to develop & grow our RTS design capability; ensuring that we deliver robust, compliant & cost-effective designs for a wide variety of substation & connection projects serving DNO's, IDNO's & Large Energy Networks.
Key Responsibilities:
With the support of the engineering manager, develop a strategy to develop the RTS design capability within the engineering team. This will include identifying recruitment requirements, developing & implementing plans.
Provide technical leadership & mentoring to junior engineers within both the RTS & wider engineering team.
Working with the engineering team leadership group, assist with cost control & resource scheduling.
Collaborate with other design principals & managers within the engineering team to integrate RTS designs within overall project designs.
Provide technical support to assist the estimating team with Pre-Tender Qualifications & Tenders.
Oversee design quality & compliance of works completed by both the internal team & third-party designers.
Develop & Review processes & procedures relating to the delivery & governance of RTS design works.
Ensure compliance with relevant National & International industry standards, including ENA, BS, IEC & customer specific standards.
Liaise with clients, contractors, and stakeholders to deliver projects on time and within budget.
Prepare and review project documentation, including method statements and technical reports.
Provide technical guidance & support during both the tendering and the construction phase of projects & assist in resolving on-site issues.
Stay updated with the latest industry trends & technologies. Promote innovation within the team.
Have a good working knowledge of the requirements of the CDM regulations, including the role & responsibilities of the principal designer.
Qualifications, Knowledge, Experience & Skills:
A minimum of a bachelor's degree in electrical, electronic engineering or systems engineering.
Minimum of 8 years' experience of RTS system engineering within the UK power distribution industry. Candidates with less than 8 years of RTS system engineering experience who can demonstrate experience in other disciplines during this period will be considered.
Full UK driving licence.
Experience with distribution system automation systems.
Familiarity with National Grid codes & DNO standards. Knowledge of SSEN systems would be seen as advantageous.
Chartered Engineer status or working towards professional registration with the IET or equivalent professional body.
Experience of delivery within the Transmission sector would be beneficial but not an essential requirement.
Skills
Experience in the use of Autocad &/or other similar CAD software advantageous, but not essential.
Experience in the use of other relevant design software, including Microsoft Visio.
Knowledge of commercial/contractual issues.
Good written, verbal communication & interpersonal skills.
Good time management, decision making & problem-solving skills.
Good computer literacy, including use of Microsoft office-based applications (e.g. word, excel & outlook).
