Brief Description





The

Principal Technical Officer

at

London Euston

is a

safety-critical post

aimed at providing vital

technical support to the Maintenance Engineering team

. In this role, you will

undertake and supervise track technical tasks

--including surveys, inspections, and design work--while ensuring full compliance with standards and consistently high-quality delivery. You'll also be responsible for managing work plans, technical documentation, system updates, and supporting equipment calibration, all while promoting safety and coaching others. Strong knowledge of track engineering, asset management, and design processes is essential, ideally backed by an NVQ Level 3/4 (or equivalent), along with excellent communication and leadership skills.

About the role (External)





As a Principal Technical Officer, your primary responsibility is to ensure all work is carried out safely and in accordance with approved systems, procedures, and company policies. You'll lead the planning and preparation of work specifications, method statements, and resource plans, while managing the quality of work delivered to ensure compliance with industry standards.


You'll be responsible for supervising and delivering a range of technical activities, including surveys, inspections, and design work. You'll also oversee the installation, testing, and commissioning of equipment, while maintaining accurate records and updating relevant systems and databases. Key duties include:

Undertaking technical inspections, investigations, and analysis of data Designing and overseeing the delivery of asset-related tasks Providing technical guidance and support to the wider team

In addition to leading technical work, you'll manage calibration systems for tools and equipment, help prioritise workloads, and prepare material specifications. You'll also contribute to continuous improvement by supporting both your own development and that of colleagues, ensuring a skilled and compliant workforce aligned with Network Rail's standards.

Experience, skills, knowledge and competencies:



Knowledge and experience of technical support activities and techniques. Knowledge and experience of electrification and plant maintenance and construction management process, systems and standards. Knowledge and experience of design requirements, processes and techniques. Able to demonstrate, promote and embed safe working behaviours within the team. Able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Able to coach, influence and develop others. Hold and retain the competencies relevant to this post and required by business need. Ideally hold or be working towards and NVQ level 3 or 4 (or equivalent) in an engineering/leadership subject. Able and willing to drive vehicles as required by business need.
