About Network Rail

About GBRX

GBRX is the strategic innovation body for the rail industry, working with industry partners, government and suppliers to identify opportunities, accelerate adoption, and enable technology to scale across the network.

We are seeking a Principal Technology Systems Engineer to help integrate emerging technologies into the rail system. The role balances strategic thinking with hands-on delivery, creating pathways for innovation to be practical, scalable, and deliver impact for passengers and freight.

Our culture is rooted in curiosity, pioneering spirit, and tenacity. We value learning from one another as much as leading, and approach challenges with a grounded perspective that encourages collaboration and respect. You'll be part of a values-driven environment that supports innovation while recognising the importance of humility and shared effort.

This hybrid role combines the flexibility of remote work with regular in-office collaboration, ensuring close connection with our diverse team of experts.

About the role (External)

We're looking for a Principal Technology Systems Engineer to join GBRX. This role offers the opportunity to shape solutions to complex challenges across the rail system. You will play a key role in making sure technologies within the GBRX portfolio are technically coherent and system ready, integrated across infrastructure and rolling stock, and aligned with wider industry needs.

Balancing strategic authorship with hands on delivery, you will translate GBRX priorities into actionable technical positions and roadmaps. These will guide delivery partners, enable integration across projects and programmes, and create pathways for innovation to scale.

Convening and collaboration will be crucial, and you will work with industry partners, suppliers, and government to turn technical challenges into clear problem statements and scoped work packages, underpinned by sound engineering and systems thinking.

What we need from you:

Proven experience in systems integration, systems engineering, or technical architecture within complex or safety-critical environments. Ability to frame technical problems and work with multidisciplinary teams to shape coordinated, delivery-focused solutions. Strong analytical and conceptual thinking, with the ability to operate effectively at both strategic and technical levels. Skilled in assessing technical feasibility, integration readiness, and the real-world constraints that affect technology adoption. Experience of engaging effectively across organisational and sector boundaries, including with senior stakeholders and delivery partners. Confidence in authoring technical documentation, position papers, and briefings that communicate complex issues with clarity. Familiarity with railway technical domains, or demonstrable experience in infrastructure, industrial systems, or other regulated environments. Educated to degree level, or equivalent professional experience in engineering, systems, or technology delivery.

If this sounds like a role for you, we'd love to see your application.
