The PDM plays a crucial role in orchestrating the delivery of seamless user experiences for clients and their customers. Enabling product teams to deliver efficiently and clients to effectively adopt changes. Their main goal is to bridge boundaries, ensuring alignment of goals, delivery, dependencies, planning and communications between the impacted teams (internally and externally), and ultimately, enable the successful delivery of the user experience for our clients and their customers.

Core Responsibilities of the PDM:



Coordination & Planning:

Cross-Domain Alignment:

Facilitate functional and business change alignment and dependency management across product and client teams contributing to the specific user experience.

Roadmap Definition:

Collaborate with Product Managers (PMs) to define a clear roadmap for delivering the desired experience and outcomes.

Release Planning & Execution:

Drive the planning and execution of releases, ensuring smooth integration and testing of components from different products and/or domains.

Risk and Issue Management:

Identify assumptions, track, and mitigate associated risks and issues that could impact the timely delivery of the user experience.

End-to-end Outcome Compatibility:

Understand the functional designs across contributing products and ensure they are compatible and support the desired user experience.

Dependency Management:

Identification:

Proactively identify dependencies between product teams and client business change required for the delivery and adoption.

Coordination:

Proactively facilitate communication and coordination between dependent teams (internally and externally) to ensure timely delivery of necessary components, including APIs.

Dependency Tracking:

Maintain a clear view of dependencies and their status.

Communication & Collaboration:

Central Point of Contact:

Serve as a central point of contact for the Product Team, bridging communication gaps between your products, other internal teams (e.g. customer success, client delivery, Kraken Experience) and clients.

Facilitating Product Discussions:

Organise and facilitate meetings and workshops involving members from different internal teams. These meetings can start from initial discovery to implementation, success tacking and retrospectives.

Information Sharing:

Ensure timely and effective sharing of information, progress updates, and potential roadblocks across all relevant teams and stakeholders.

Quality & Standards:

Ensuring Consistency:

Promote and ensure adherence to consistent standards, security best practices, and architectural guidelines across contributing domains for a unified experience.

Quality Assurance Coordination:

Collaborate with teams across domains to ensure comprehensive testing of the end-to-end user experience. This can be extended to include beta group testing with Kraken clients.

Performance & Scalability:

Work with domain and platform teams to ensure solutions meet the performance and scalability requirements of the overall user experience and uphold Kraken SLO/A standards.

Documentation:

Ensure the creation and maintenance of relevant technical documentation within Kraken Docs that spans across domains for the specific user experience (internally and externally).

Process Improvement:

Identifying Bottlenecks:

Identify bottlenecks and inefficiencies in the cross-domain development process.

Driving Improvements:

Propose and drive process improvements to enhance collaboration, communication, and delivery efficiency across domain teams.

How PDMs Operate with Product Managers:



Shared Ownership of Outcome:

The DPM and Product Managers (PM) share ownership of the successful delivery of the user experience. The PM focuses on the "what" and "why" (user needs, market, business value), while the PDM works with engineers to focus on the implementation and coordination.

Collaborative Planning:

The DPM jointly defines the roadmap for the experience, with the PM outlining the features and the DPM outlining the implementation approach and dependencies.

Risk Assessment & Mitigation:

The DPM collaboratively identifies and assess both product and technical risks, and work together to develop mitigation strategies.

Communication to Stakeholders:

They jointly communicate progress, risks, and key decisions to stakeholders, providing a holistic view of the experience delivery.

Prioritisation:

They work together to prioritise features and tasks based on user value, business impact, and technical feasibility.

Proactive Communication:

Regularly and transparently communicate progress, risks, and dependencies.

Facilitation & Mediation:

Act as a facilitator and mediator to resolve disagreements and ensure smooth collaboration between teams.

Technical Understanding:

Possess a strong understanding of the underlying functional architecture of the involved domains.

Relationship Building:

Build strong working relationships with engineers, product managers and client facing teams across the business.

Focus on User Value:

Always keep the end-user experience and desired outcome at the forefront of technical decision-making.

Pragmatism & Problem-Solving:

Be pragmatic in finding solutions and effectively troubleshoot technical challenges.
