The Production Engineer plays a key role in supporting day-to-day shop floor manufacturing and inspection activities. You will be responsible for providing metrology and engineering support to ensure components are produced to the highest quality standards, on time, and right first time. This includes hands-on work with CMM equipment, gauging and fixturing, and process improvements within the machining and assembly environment.
The role requires close collaboration with production teams, operators, quality, and design engineers to maintain dimensional accuracy, resolve non-conformances, and continuously improve production capability.
(The employee will willingly undertake, upon request, any other task they are able to perform. Elements of the role may vary as new technology, procedures and equipment are introduced.)
Key Responsibilities
Metrology & Dimensional Control
Program, operate, and maintain CMM machines to inspect precision components.
Design, validate, and manage hard gauges, checking fixtures, and tooling used in production.
Conduct first-off inspections, in-process checks, and final dimensional verifications.
Analyse measurement data to monitor process capability (SPC, Cpk, Ppk) and identify trends or deviations.
Production & Process Support
Work on the shop floor daily, providing hands-on engineering support to operators and inspectors.
Investigate and resolve dimensional and process-related issues promptly.
Support root cause analysis (RCA, 8D, 5-Why) and implement corrective and preventive actions.
Review and optimise machining methods, jigs, and fixtures to improve consistency and reduce rework.
Participate in new product introduction (NPI), ensuring metrology and inspection requirements are embedded in production processes.
Continuous Improvement
Identify and implement opportunities to improve quality, efficiency, and workflow within machining and inspection areas.
Contribute to lean and right-first-time initiatives, including setup reduction, standardisation, and tooling improvements.
Maintain accurate documentation for gauging, calibration, and inspection procedures in line with AS9100/ISO standards.
Collaboration & Communication
Work closely with Production Supervisors, Quality Engineers, and Design Engineers to ensure manufacturability and quality compliance.
Support training of operators and apprentices in the correct use of gauges and measurement systems.
Liaise with suppliers regarding gauge manufacture, calibration, and metrology equipment maintenance.
Skills & Experience Required
Essential:
Proven experience in a precision manufacturing or machining environment.
Hands-on CMM operation and understanding of measurement principles.
Experience designing or validating gauges, fixtures, and tooling.
Competent in reading engineering drawings, GD&T, and CAD data interpretation.
Strong analytical skills for data analysis and problem solving.
Experience supporting root cause investigations and process improvement on the shop floor.
Excellent communication and teamwork skills with a practical, proactive approach.
Desirable:
Experience within aerospace, automotive, or high-precision engineering.
Familiarity with AS9100 / ISO 9001 quality systems.
Working knowledge of CMM programming software (PC-DMIS, Zeiss Calypso, or similar).
Experience with Lean Manufacturing or Six Sigma tools.
Personal Attributes
Passionate about hands-on engineering and problem-solving.
Detail-oriented, with strong ownership of quality and delivery.
Collaborative, approachable, and confident working alongside operators and engineers.
Adaptable to a fast-paced production environment with changing priorities.
