The Role



The Production Line Manager will oversee the day-to-day running of the production line, ensuring that high-quality equipment is produced safely, efficiently, and on time. The role involves leading a small team of production operatives (including apprentices), driving best practice, continuous improvement, and a strong safety culture.
The Production Line Manager will also be responsible for maintaining and operating the MRP/inventory system, ensuring stock availability and accuracy.

Key Responsibilities



1) Production Planning & Coordination



Plan daily/weekly production schedules and manufacturing orders Allocate labour, equipment, and materials Coordinate with purchasing, sales, and engineering teams

2) Supervision of Staff



Assign tasks and supervise workshop operators Support training for new team members Monitor performance and adherence to procedures Manage attendance and apprentice-related requirements

3) Quality Assurance



Ensure products meet specification and regulatory requirements Perform and enforce quality checks throughout production Address defects and implement corrective action Report, document, and support the resolution of issues

4) Safety & Compliance



Enforce workplace safety standards Implement and maintain risk assessments, safety documentation, and signage Conduct safety briefings and audits Ensure compliance with regulatory and company requirements Report and investigate incidents and near-misses

5) Process Optimisation



Monitor production performance metrics Identify bottlenecks and inefficiencies Recommend and support implementation of improvements Support automation and digitalisation projects with engineering

6) Inventory & Resource Management



Maintain stock of raw materials and components Investigate and resolve inventory discrepancies Create purchase orders as required Assist purchasing in identifying suitable alternatives when needed Minimise waste and help manage cost reduction Coordinate upkeep and maintenance of workshop equipment

7) Reporting & Documentation



Record production output, downtime, scrap, and issues Provide production-related reports to accounts/sales teams as requested Maintain SOPs, logs, and other production documentation

8) Technical Problem-Solving



Troubleshoot equipment and workflow issues Escalate major breakdowns to engineering Liaise with machinists/suppliers to resolve component issues Compare components to technical drawings and identify inconsistencies

Essential Skills & Experience



Previous experience in a production leadership or line-management role Experience in mechanical / electro-mechanical manufacturing Strong understanding of production planning, workflow optimisation, and quality control Ability to interpret technical drawings/engineering documentation (e.g., wiring diagrams, mechanical drawings) Demonstrable people-management ability Strong communication and problem-solving skills (hands-on where required) Health & Safety experience, including risk assessments and method statements Strong commitment to safety, compliance, and operational discipline

Desirable Skills & Experience



Knowledge of data storage technologies and destruction methods Advanced electronics knowledge (serial comms, PCB fault-finding, etc.) Understanding of electromagnetics, coils, and coil-winding processes Experience working with up to 900V DC and high-capacity storage capacitors Experience working with live equipment Ability to provide detailed remote technical support to customers
