Production Operative (Manufacturing/Engineering) {Part time 18hrs-22.5hrs}
Established in 1985 (Ltd in 1996) We are a small family-owned business manufacturing hand tools for specialist trades, and for engineering distributors across the UK and abroad, including the MOD supply chain. We are the leading manufacturer in the UK of stone masonry tools, and produce many other tools under white label for other well-known brands.
Position Overview
We are looking for an enthusiastic and adaptable Production Operative who will be working primarily in our assembly areas, manufacturing specialist hammers, axes, and other hand tools. You will be using various production methods to create high quality products for our customers, using top quality parts and processes, including some machine loading and minding tasks.
The role is a diverse roll, where you won't be doing the same thing all day, every day, but there may be periods of high demand which require it at times.
Because of the nature of work, it's a role where you need to be physically agile, as you may be stood for periods whilst operating machinery, you will be loading materials into machines, and handling on occasions items weighing up to 16kg. You will be packing the products that you make, loading packing boxes for despatch onto trolleys, handling steel billets and components for processing etc.
The environment you will work can be noisy, dusty and mildly dirty at times, PPE and protective clothing is provided, but you must be comfortable with working in an engineering environment amongst noisy machines, wearing staple PPE such as glasses, ear defenders and safety shoes.
All the processes we need you to undertake can be taught. If you have a 'can do' attitude, a knack for DIY type hand skills, are willing to learn, and you can put your best efforts into the role, we can teach you any number of skills.
You need to be able to manage your time efficiently, to plan each day's production processes and make decisions about which processes to tackle first, making the best use of your time to be as efficient as possible. You need to be organised, and be able to look at multiple orders and see where you can simplify your workload to suit (i.e. do part A on order 1, then part A on order 2, while order 1 dries/sets), then move on to part B / next process etc. You will be left to work on your orders with minimal supervision, so you need to be self-motivated to get the job completed.
Key Responsibilities
Hammer and Axe Production
The number one priority for your role is the efficient production of Hammers and Axes. Using components that need preparation and customisation, you will assemble finished items for orders, quality check, paint and pack them. Producing Hammers and Axes to order, and for stock, to a very high quality.
Packing
We produce a wide range of tools, so other departments will bring you finished items which require painting and packing. From hand painting Stone Tools, to packing large wooden mauls, the work is varied.
Machine Tending
Part of your time will be to machine tend. This will be loading materials into a machine (Manual or CNC) and monitoring the performance of that process, and the parts that come from it. No special skills are required, training is provided, you just need an attention to detail, and to be methodical.
Quality Control
We all monitor our own quality, and that of our colleagues, so that we prevent standards slipping, and catch any issues early. Your role will include quality checking your own work, and that of others, catching issues early, and making sure we only produce the best quality products for our customer.
General Production Operations
We manufacture a wide range of products. As a small team, we flex and rotate around the production area to help where there is demand. You may also be required to work in areas which may not be your principal area, but to help out with absences and holidays of others.

Qualifications & Experience
(Beneficial but not mandatory - Training Provided)
Experience in a Production/Engineering environment.
Experience of working independently and in small teams.
Problem solving attitude - willing to think outside the box and offer suggestions to supervisors.
Effective communication and interpersonal skills.

Working Hours - To be agreed -Work around School Hours/Family commitments-
Minimum of 18hrs over 4 days, up to 22.5hrs over 5 days contracted (4.5hrs/day).
Overtime often available subject to demand.
Window of Hours available - Mon-Fri 8am-5pm, Friday 8am-1:30pm.
