Nuclear Restoration Services Limited (NRS) is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA). NRS is responsible for decommissioning first generation nuclear power stations Berkeley, Bradwell, Chapelcross, Dungeness A, Hinkley Point A, Hunterston A, Oldbury, Sizewell A, Trawsfynydd and Wylfa, and research sites Harwell and Winfrith. NRS is also responsible for electricity generation at hydroelectric plant Maentwrog. As a division of NRS, NRS Dounreay is responsible for the clean-up and demolition of the former centre of fast reactor research and development.

"At our Berkeley Site in Gloucestershire, we retrieve and package nuclear waste from underground vaults with remote handling technology for long-term storage in a facility on site. Additionally, we process certain types of waste for despatch off site.


We are looking for Production Technicians to join the team to support this work that will last well into the current decade and beyond.


You will have a strong safety focus and work ethic and be willing to work as part of a multi-skilled team. You will be committed to following procedures and not afraid to challenge instructions if you believe there is a safety element that has not been considered. We'll provide you with a variety of training in health physics and plant operations that support our waste retrieval programme.


Initially your working pattern will be Monday to Thursday, 07.25 to 17.00, but after basic training and having gained suitable experience, there may be the opportunity in the future to move to a shift-based rota. You must also be willing to take on a 24/7 standby role if required."

Key Deliverables




Retrieval of waste from the vaults and caves using remote processes and equipment.*
Encapsulation of waste in a purpose-built plant. Movement of waste packages around site on purpose-built transporters, including to and from the storage facility. Conditioning of waste in shielded packages using an automatic drying system. Processing and loading of Low-Level Waste for despatch off-site. Entry into radiological controlled areas, which may include the wearing of a respirator. Subject to business requirement you may be required to fulfil a standby role.

Qualifications & Experience




Experience of working in an industrial environment (essential).*
Appropriate technical qualification e.g., City and Guilds, BTEC, NVQ (NQF Level 2) or relevant experience (essential). Experienced in the competent use of industrial hand tools, operation of equipment (cranes, FLTs, MEWPs etc.), operation of industrial plant, plant and maintenance (desirable).

Flexible working - where possible. The equivalent of 25 days (185 hours per year) annual leave plus Public Holidays (59.2 hours per year). This increases by 2 days (14.8 hours per year) annual leave after two full calendar years of service (as at 5th January in the leave year) , and an additional 3 days (22.2 hours per year) annual leave after five full calendar years of service (as at 5th January in the leave year). You also have the option to buy or sell the equivalent of 5 days (37 hours) annual leave each year (available in specific windows for the following holiday year). For the purpose of assessing an employee's annual leave entitlement, a day means seven and two fifths (7.4) hours. A pro rata entitlement will apply for part time workers.
