About us
We are seeking to appoint a Clinical Professor in Colorectal Surgery, with strong expertise in both research and teaching. The Professor will be based at UCL within Division Surgery Interventional Sciences, with clinical commitments as an honorary consultant at the partner hospital UCLH. The successful candidate will have world leading track record in robotic colorectal surgery and transanal microsurgery, with expectation to lead the creation of an advanced surgical simulation training centre in collaboration with other UCL partner hospitals.
About the role

  • This is a newly created post for a Professor who is a senior surgeon, with a world leading research portfolio, and a strong track record of grant income in clinical trials.
  • Specifically, the post holder will have a focus on large bowel preservation, with an excellent and proven track record of leadership in clinical trials.
  • Clinically, we expect the professor to be a leader in robotic colorectal surgery and transanal microsurgery.
  • The successful candidate will be expected to collaborate with the clinical leadership and the management team to deliver Division and Trust objectives.
Role specific details
  • The Professor is expected to drive initiatives to transform both clinical practices in large bowel preservation and surgical robotic training.
  • The Professor will lead clinical trial research into large bowel preservation.
  • To drive delivery of this specialist kind of surgery locally and enable its availability nationally through UCL and UCLH.
  • To pursue their research agenda, publishing in high impact national and international peer-reviewed journals contributing to UCLs REF.
  • To generate income through competitive grants, CPD and short courses, and consultancy projects funded by companies working in the field of robotic surgery.
  • To lead the creation of an advanced surgical simulation training centre and in collaboration with UCLH and other partners (e.g. Royal Free).
  • To bring expertise and collaboration with societies, industry and others, to agree standardisation for key index procedures and metrics-based approaches, benchmarked to deliver quality assurance.
  • To enable building of networks to disseminate knowledge and skills acquisition to surgeons, widely.
  • To have the expertise and deliver training and access to effective, safe and timely surgical intervention. To develop structured and objective ways to determine proficiency.
  • The Professor will contribute to the research culture and profile of the Department, Division and Campus.
  • To contribute to teaching and training within the Department, including supervising graduate research students.
  • To line manage and offer mentorship and development to less experienced colleagues.
  • To contribute as appropriate to the Department and Faculty.
  • Clinically, we would anticipate delivery of a one day extended theatre session and clinic, along with colorectal MDT attendance, ward round, and supporting SPA. In addition, we expect the following commitments:

About you
The Post holder must have a higher academic degree e.g. PhD, or evidence of an equivalent level of attainment in research publications.
Must have License to practice medicine in the UK
A world-leading reputation in the field of large bowel preservation, robotic surgery, and relevant clinical trials is required.
Knowledge and understanding of the principles of resource and budgetary Management.
The successful candidate must have awareness of Higher Education issues and the possible implications for the department.
