Programme Grant Manager In Quantum Dynamics Simulations

London, United Kingdom

Job Description

About us The Chemistry Department at UCL is one of the top-ranked departments in the UK, with 100% of its outputs ranked as being world-leading (4*) or internationally excellent (3*) in the recent REF2021. The Department is committed to supporting excellence in both research and teaching. The department offers undergraduate BSc and MSci programmes in Chemistry and currently teaches 700 undergraduates registered in Chemistry as well as students who select Chemistry on the Natural Sciences programme and first year Chemistry for life scientists. The Department also offers a number of Postgraduate Taught Masters courses with about 100 students per year. The Department has an overall PhD student school of around 200 students. The Chemistry Department has over 60 members of academic staff carrying out world-leading research. We specialize in areas of organic synthesis, chemical biology, computational chemistry, nanotechnology, inorganic and materials chemistry, physical chemistry and chemical physics. The department research income is derived from many sources including UKRI (EPSRC, BBSRC, MRC, and NERC), European Commission and a wide range of charities and industrial partners in the UK, Europe and the USA. Details about our research can be found on the departmental website: http://www.ucl.ac.uk/chemistry

About the role The post is to manage and be an active part of the COSMOS Programme Grant funded by the EPSRC. This programme grant is a multi-centre project to develop the software for quantum dynamics simulations. The groups involved are Worth (UCL), Curchod (Bristol), Shalashilin (Leeds), Penfold (Newcastle), Kirrander (Oxford) and Habershon (Warwick). There are also over 30 international project partners involved. The research being done will be using algorithms based on Gaussian Wavepackets to describe the wavefunction required to treat molecular reactivity. The aim is to describe in detail quantum systems, such as molecules excited by light, or spin-systems involved in quantum technology. Along with experimental colleagues, the software will be made usable by non-experts and able to support measurements made by, e.g. time-resolved spectroscopy. The appointment is initially for three years.

About you The successful candidate will have a PhD degree in chemistry, physics, or similar subject. Good administrative and communications skills are essential. A knowledge of quantum mechanics and quantum dynamics simulations, as well as using quantum chemical methods for excited state calculations is also required, as well as experience with HPC and programming. Experience with Fortran Programming and software development tools such as git are desirable. They will be expected to work in a highly multidisciplinary collaborative team, and have effective verbal and written communication skills in English.
