The Principal Prompt Engineer plays a pivotal role in shaping AMS's prompt engineering capabilities across platforms. This role is central to delivering AMS's digital strategy by providing technical leadership and implementation expertise across both customer-facing and internal AI solutions. The Principal Prompt Engineer ensures that innovation, accessibility, and data integrity are embedded in all touchpoints, driving excellence in prompt engineering practices and outcomes. Key Accountabilities



Things you will do:




Lead the design, writing, and optimization of prompts for diverse AI models and use cases, ensuring alignment with enterprise standards. Make timely and well-informed technical decisions that guide the team through ambiguity and ensure consistent progress across prompt engineering initiatives. Adapt prompt strategies and delivery approaches in response to evolving requirements or constraints, maintaining alignment with strategic outcomes. Translate complex technical requirements into clear, actionable plans, enabling shared understanding and effective execution across cross-functional teams. Creation of AI test plans and execution of testing in line with our AI testing framework Balance speed and quality in prompt delivery, making judgement calls that consider broader platform impact and stakeholder expectations. Lead resolution of intricate prompt-related challenges, engaging relevant experts and stakeholders to drive consensus and sustainable solutions. Drive the evolution of prompt engineering practices, ensuring seamless integration with AI services, agents, and third-party APIs. Work closely with developers, AI engineers, and architects from other teams to deliver against AI priorities. Provide architectural input and hands-on support to ensure robust, secure, and performant prompt solutions. Champion best practices in prompt engineering, including responsible AI principles and performance benchmarking. Collaborate with data engineering teams to ensure prompts are underpinned by scalable data pipelines and technologies such as semantic search and knowledge graphs. Ensure technical documentation is maintained and aligned with governance and compliance requirements. Use AI development tools to rapidly convert business concepts into lightweight, demonstrable AI prototypes. Evaluate and recommend emerging AI capabilities and tools for recruitment applications.

You'll need to demonstrate:





Must haves


Prompt Engineering


Expertise in designing, refining, and evaluating prompts for diverse LLMs (e.g., OpenAI, Anthropic, Google etc.) across varied use cases. Ability to construct modular, reusable prompt components that support orchestration and chaining. Experience applying prompt engineering patterns (e.g., few-shot, zero-shot, CoT, retrieval-augmented generation) to optimise performance and reliability. Skilled in prompt evaluation techniques, including human-in-the-loop testing, A/B comparisons, and automated scoring frameworks. Familiarity with prompt testing and evaluation tools (e.g., OpenAI Evals, PromptLayer, TruLens) to assess performance, safety, and robustness. Understanding of responsible AI principles and how they apply to prompt design, including bias detection, ethical safeguards, and transparency.

Familiarity with programming languages & tools


Experience using Python, JavaScript or other similar languages to build lightweight prototypes in order to validate AI concepts and support solutioning with business stakeholders. Ability to leverage AI coding tools (e.g., Claude Code) to accelerate development of proof-of-value solutions. Comfortable scripting basic functionality to support prompt testing, chaining, and orchestration. Familiarity with integrating APIs and tools to simulate end-to-end AI workflows in prototype environments.

Familiarity with generative AI tools, techniques and market developments


Proficient in using leading generative AI platforms and APIs for enterprise-grade applications. Familiarity with orchestration frameworks and agent tooling to support multi-step reasoning and task automation. Awareness of emerging trends in prompt tooling, model capabilities, and evaluation techniques, including hallucination mitigation and grounding strategies. Understanding of responsible AI principles, including bias detection, safety testing, and ethical considerations in generative AI deployment. Ability to assess and recommend new generative AI capabilities for integration into recruitment workflows and business prototypes.
