An exciting opportunity has arisen for a

Consultant Psychiatrist in Adult Psychiatry

to join the team at the Central Clinic in Swansea.


This role provides the opportunity to make a real difference in shaping and improving mental health services, with the backing of a highly supportive multidisciplinary management team.


The successful candidate will have overall

clinical responsibility for the management of outpatients

, overseeing

Care and Treatment Plans

, and leading a multidisciplinary team to deliver safe, effective, and holistic care.


Main Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical




Provide a high-quality psychiatric service for adults with mental health disorders, including prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation. Maintain continuing responsibility for the care of patients, working closely with consultant colleagues and the multidisciplinary team. Act as

Educational Supervisor

for assigned junior doctors, ensuring appropriate supervision, career guidance, and development. Adhere to the principles of

Good Medical Practice

as set out by the GMC. Participate in clinical governance, risk management, and healthcare governance activities. Engage in research and development in line with national and regional priorities. Take part in annual appraisal, revalidation, and job planning reviews, including maintaining CPD in line with Royal College requirements. Contribute to directorate planning, service development, and pathway redesign initiatives. Participate in the

1 in 14 on-call rota

with prospective cover, providing cross-site support as required. Undertake domiciliary visits where clinically appropriate.

Education & Training




Provide teaching, training, and examination for medical students, trainees, and other healthcare staff. Contribute to postgraduate and continuing medical education activities both locally and regionally. Offer bedside and clinical teaching for medical undergraduates during clinics, ward rounds, and emergencies. Provide feedback and mentorship to trainees and medical students. Participate in undergraduate examinations for medical students where required. Support multiprofessional training and encourage collaborative learning within the broader team.

Responsibilities Specific to the Role




Conduct comprehensive psychiatric assessments, including history-taking, mental state examination, physical examination, and risk assessments. Request and interpret relevant investigations across biological, psychological, and social domains. Provide ongoing physical health monitoring alongside mental health interventions. Manage outpatient and follow-up clinics, including diagnostic assessments, treatment planning, and medication reviews. Participate actively in

Community Mental Health Team (CMHT) meetings

and referral discussions. Communicate effectively with patients, families, carers, and colleagues across disciplines. Contribute to audit, service improvement, and quality assurance activities. Provide education and support to patients and their families regarding treatment plans and recovery.

Qualifications

Essential




Complete GMC registration and licence to practice. On the GMC Specialist Register in Psychiatry (Adult Psychiatry) or within 6 months of achieving CCT at the time of interview. MRCPsych (UK) or equivalent.

Desirable




Higher degree (MD, PhD, MSc, or equivalent). Teaching or medical education qualification.

Clinical Experience




#

Essential




Broad experience in adult psychiatry, including inpatient, outpatient, and community settings. Ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary colleagues. Experience in teaching and training junior staff. Evidence of completing audit projects and applying outcomes to service development.

Desirable




Experience in service development and commissioning. Familiarity with crisis and home treatment services. Research experience with publications in psychiatry or mental health. Experience as an Approved Clinician under the

Mental Health Act 1983
