About Birmingham City University

For almost two centuries, Birmingham City University has shaped thousands of lives. We have helped redefine a city, influenced the region, and impacted further afield. From our roots as the Birmingham Government School of Design, we have forged a formidable history.

The Role: Reporting Accountant

As Reporting Accountant, you will be responsible for the preparation and submission of key statutory returns, including the Annual Financial Return (AFR) and TRAC, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and meeting all deadlines. You will provide supporting analysis to the University Executive Team and relevant committees, ensuring returns are appropriately reviewed and approved. A key focus will be on improving efficiency by identifying automation opportunities and streamlining processes. You'll also manage balance sheet and cash flow forecasting, integrate these with budget and management accounts, and maintain the tuition fee income forecasting model. The role involves maintaining accurate system hierarchies, producing reconciliations between forecast and actual tuition and grant income, and working closely with stakeholders across the University to optimise reporting. You'll support governance by scheduling and coordinating TRAC Oversight Group meetings, stay up to date with technical guidance, and contribute to continuous improvement. The position also includes deputising for the Head of Financial Planning & Analysis as needed.

Employment history and qualifications

Information relating to applicants' career history and their qualifications will be drawn from their ERP record, and specifically information entered under the 'Skills and Qualifications' tab of the 'Career and Performance' section.

You are strongly encouraged and advised to update these sections of your ERP record with any and all information that you would like to appear on your application. It is vitally important that you update your record to include your qualifications if those qualifications are essential criteria for the responsibility you wish to apply for.

Please be aware that apart from the Previous Employment and Degrees & Qualifications sections, all other details on your talent profile will be visible to your line manager.

When completing your profile, should you be unable to locate a specific professional body or certification that you would like to include on your profile please email: Learning.OD@bcu.ac.uk and they will add this as soon as possible.

For further guidance on updating your Talent Profile, please refer to the user guide: Building Your Talent Profile in ERP
