The School
The School of Computing and Engineering is a professional and student focused School with high quality, research informed teaching and student experience at the top of its priority list. The Role
The role focuses on enhancing sustainability in next-generation telecom networks by integrating carbon intensity into testbed energy measurements, deploying and simulating xApp/rApp for carbon tracing, and contributing to joint outputs such as technical reports, open-source tools, and standardisation drafts.
The Person
Essential Skills/Qualifications:
MSc (or near completion of PhD) in Telecommunications, Computer Science, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, or related field.
Strong background in 5G/6G networks, RIC frameworks, or O-RAN architectures.
Hands-on experience with testbeds, simulations, and energy measurement tools.
Solid programming skills (Python, C++, or Java) and familiarity with network automation/orchestration.
Knowledge of AI/ML for networks (e.g., xApps/rApps development).
Desirable Skills/Experience:
Previous experience with carbon/energy-aware systems.
Exposure to federated learning architectures or trust/security in telecom networks.
Familiarity with standardisation bodies.
Track record of contributing to academic publications and/or open-source projects.
Personal Attributes:
Strong teamwork and communication skills for working with international partners.
Ability to work independently and deliver results to strict deadlines.
Interest in sustainability, climate-conscious computing, and next-gen telecom research.
