The mission of the UCL GOS Institute of Child Health is to maximise and advocate for the holistic health of all children, young people and the adults they will become, through world-class research, education and public engagement. The UCL GOS ICH, together with its clinical partner Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, forms the largest concentration of children's health research outside North America. The 2024-29 GOS ICH strategy focuses on its five scientific programmes. GOS ICH's activities include active engagement with children and families, to ensure that our work is relevant and appropriate to their needs. GOS ICH generates the funding for our research by setting out our proposals in high quality applications to public, charitable and industrial funding bodies and disseminates the results of our research by publication in the medical and scientific literature, to clinicians, policy makers and the wider public. About the role

A Research Assistant is sought to support a project that aims to create openly available computational tools for automated imaging analysis of neurodevelopmental disorders. Genetic testing has transformed our understanding of neurodevelopmental epilepsy. Identification of common genetic mutations in specific genes has enabled precision diagnosis and more recently the development of genetic therapies. However, we lack the imaging tools to understand of how these mutations disrupt healthy brain development, how brain changes relate to patient symptoms and how to best target treatment. This project seeks develop tools to better understand, diagnose, monitor and target in children with genetic epilepsies In close collaboration with Great Ormond Street Hospital and other leading epilepsy hospitals, we are collecting unique imaging cohorts of genetic disorders. These will offer an unprecedented opportunity to further our understanding of genetic epilepsies and to create robust, clinical useful imaging tools. The post offers a unique opportunity for the appointee to join a pioneering translational machine learning neuroimaging project with a broader interest linking imaging characteristics to molecular biology and neurodevelopmental symptoms. The project is supported by the Wellcome Trust, with the potential to expand the role into a funded PhD project.

About you

We are seeking a motivated and talented candidate, with an Honours degree (minimum 2:1) in Neuroscience, physics, computer science or a related discipline, plus training and an excellent background in research. Experience with coding and data handling is essential. Good interpersonal skills with an ability to work cooperatively in a multidisciplinary setting, excellent time management, and the ability to liaise with experts in clinical neuroimaging. Experience of working with neuroimaging data is desirable.
