Applications are invited for a postdoctoral researcher to join the quantum technologies team to develop a compact sensing platform, specifically a new optical frequency metrology experiment in thermal atomic strontium. We are seeking a focussed and motivated experimental researcher who will be responsible for the development of high-performance experimental hardware, as well as benchmarking new techniques and protocols for practical applications. Your work will form an important collaborative contribution towards the EPSRC funded Quantum Technology Hub in Quantum-Enabled Position Navigation and Timing (https://qepnt.org/).



The successful applicant will be based in the Experimental Quantum Optics and Photonics group at Strathclyde, working in collaboration with researchers developing atomic sensors. Candidates will have a PhD (or equivalent) in experimental atomic physics and practical experience of development of platforms for atomic sensors. Technical knowledge of atomic metrology, including lasers, optics and vacuum, is highly desired. An ability to prepare scientific publications and present research outcomes at local, national and international research meetings is expected.



The Experimental Quantum Optics and Photonics group has active research and development projects in a wide variety of cutting-edge quantum technology projects. This is part of an extensive programme seeking to translate fundamental research in atom-photon interactions to applications in sensing and metrology. A particular aspect of our work is technology development towards miniaturisation and ultimately manufacturability of atomic devices, that can be operated outside a laboratory environment.



The University of Strathclyde has established a position as a leading UK centre for Quantum Technology covering activities from fundamental and applied research through technology development to industrialisation. The University and the Department of Physics have invested in academic appointments and the development of new state-of-the-art laboratory spaces, as part of a strategic aim to support and expand these activities.
