The full-time starting salary is normally 42,860.00 per annum, with progression available in post to 46,586.00 per annum.

Grade: UL

Full-time, 12 month fixed term role.

From 1 August 2025, the salary range for this role is 44,131 - 51,182.

On 1 August 2025 Birmingham City University will migrate to a new pay structure, at which time the post holder's salary will be adjusted to the corresponding point on the new grade.

We invite applications for the position of Research Fellow in AI and LLM to work on exciting real-world challenges supporting next generation healthcare solutions. Based in the College of Computing, the ideal candidate will have strong skills and expertise in applying core data science and artificial intelligence concepts and tools to solve complex problems. Candidates will also be developing machine learning techniques and applying them at scale to specific projects with regular interaction with customers. In addition to core expertise in data, AI and LLM, we welcome candidates with strong interest in cross-disciplinary research in urban computing, healthcare, or transportation networks. Experience of working in collaboration with customers/users to deliver bespoke technological solutions will be advantageous.

Applicants must be qualified to a PhD level and have evidence of strong research experience in their own technical areas. In addition, applicants will need to be able to demonstrate their ability to critically engage with a range of complex systems; engage in conceptual thinking and brainstorming activities; meet deadlines and work within interdisciplinary teams of researchers and academics.



You will have:


Proven experience in core tools of data science and analytics including in programming languages such as R and Python. Excellent publication record in peer-reviewed journals or conferences Experience of working in multidisciplinary projects including interaction with end users Proficient in programming or scripting languages, including Python, C++ and Java Script Ability to work independently on multiple streams of research and collaboratively across multi-disciplines Possess strong skills in analytical and quantitative research in the focus areas Excellent communication skills and a collaborative attitude Ability to adhere to deadlines, achieve and deliver important project milestones

It would be desirable if you have the ambition and ability to learn rapidly and to adapt to new areas of research beyond your current skills and expertise, proven track record of attracting funding from variety of sources with substantial experience of developing research proposals to external funding bodies, prior working experience within funded research projects, relevant industrial experience, established relationships with UK and International collaborations and ability to communicate projects/concepts to a range of audiences.
