Research Technician, Microbiology, Astrobiology

Temporary role starting 2nd October for 6 months with possible extension

Working 37hrs, this role will be working on the Milton Keynes campus

Paying \xc2\xa315.85ph, equates to \xc2\xa330,487 per annum

Our client, is a public distance Learning and Research University, and one of the biggest universities in the UK for undergraduate education.

They are looking to recruit a Research Technician, Microbiology, Astrobiology to join the STEM team on their exciting projects.

The role

The Research technician will carry out various microbiology and molecular biology duties to support the ongoing planetary protection research of AstrobiologyOU. You will work closely with a team of research staff to enable the delivery of a project studying endospores and extremophiles which can survive in space assembly cleanrooms. You will culture microorganisms including spore formers and non-spore formers, record data, and perform basic analyses as directed by the research lead.

Skills and experience

  • Undergraduate degree in a STEM subject (preferably microbiology, molecular biology, environmental or biological sciences with a strong element of microbiology).
  • Proven laboratory experience.
  • Demonstrable practical experience of working within a Higher Education / scientific research establishment.
  • Practical experience in technical support.
  • Relevant technical knowledge of equipment typically used in microbiology and molecular biology laboratories.
  • A good understanding of H&S legislation, and its application in a relevant laboratory environment.
  • Demonstrable organisational, planning and problem-solving skills, including ability to anticipate and analyse problems and introduce workable solutions.
