This research post sits within GCU's Research Centre for Health (ReaCH) in the School of Health & Life Sciences. ReaCH has an international reputation for delivering high impact research. In the recent Research Excellence Framework assessment (2021) 91% of GCU's health related research has been formally classified as world-leading or internationally excellent. More over, the impact of GCU's applied health research was classified as 'outstanding' and surpassed by only one other UK institution. The University's outstanding record for delivering impact for the common good against the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals was also highlighted in the recent THE Global Impact Rankings with GCU 1st in Scotland for SDG3, good health and wellbeing. ReaCH comprises 10 multi-disciplinary research groups which collectively work on enhancing the lives of people with long term health conditions as well as developing and evaluating public health and lifestyle interventions.



We are seeking to appoint a part-time (0.3FTE) Research Assistant to the Stroke Association funded study PRACTISE (

to increase rehabilitation time and improve motor recovery: a feasibility study). The post holder will act as the blind assessor for the PRACTISE study, which aims to examine the feasbility of a personalised physiotherapy programme consisting of goal setting, supported self- management and exercise supported by an online video-based exercise platform compared to usual care, for increasing rehabilitation time after stroke. The successful candidate will be responsible for arranging and carrying out the assessments associated with the PRACTISE intervention, in participants homes, and according to assessment protocols and the recording of the resulting data. They will work closely with the Chief Investigator and Study Co-ordinator.


You should be a physiotherapist, occupational therapist (or equivalent) and be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council. You should have experience in the clinical assessment of patients and desirably hold a full drivers license. You should have a good knowledge of the requirements of undertaking clinical research within the NHS including governance and ethical issues.



You should have excellent written and oral communication skills, with strong attention to detail, and be able to work well within a team but also motivated to work independently and prioritise tasks. You should be hardworking, organised, enthusiastic and flexible and able to take initiative as required.
