Overview
Malvern St James is seeking an enthusiastic and talented individual to join our pastoral and Expressive Arts team as a Resident Boarding Tutor with Responsibility for Drama. This unique dual-role position combines pastoral care and boarding duties with active involvement in our thriving Drama and wider Expressive Arts Department.
The successful candidate will be a dynamic presence both in the boarding house and on the stage, inspiring girls through curricular and extracurricular drama, supporting productions, and helping to foster a positive and creative boarding community.
Key Responsibilities
Drama and Expressive Arts Responsibilities
Assist in the planning, delivery, and support of Drama lessons across all Key Stages (including support with GCSE and A-Level courses).
Take a lead or supporting role in extracurricular Drama activities including:
Drama clubs, rehearsals, productions, and the annual Speech and Drama Showcase.
Supporting technical aspects such as lights, sound, set design, costume, and props.
Running or assisting with lunchtime, after-school, or weekend rehearsals.
Mentor Performing Arts Scholars and Prefects, encouraging their development and leadership in school productions.
Take responsibility for designated Drama administrative tasks (e.g., attendance, collating portfolios, social media updates, noticeboards).
Assist with preparations and support for LAMDA and other graded Drama exams.
Collaborate with the Music, Dance, and Art departments on cross-disciplinary projects and performances.
Act as a role model for creativity, professionalism, and commitment to the arts.
Boarding and Pastoral Responsibilities
Live on site and be a full member of the Boarding House staff team, supporting the Housemistress and Deputy Housemistress.
Promote the wellbeing, safety, and emotional development of boarders.
Build positive, trusting relationships with boarders and be attentive to their pastoral needs, including support during the induction process.
Supervise daily routines such as meals, preps, bedtime, and general house duties.
Monitor and report on student welfare and behaviour, maintaining accurate records as required.
Help organise and supervise weekend and evening boarding activities, including trips and in-house events.
Liaise with academic staff to support boarders' progress, including participation in House Tutorials and academic monitoring.
Accompany girls on hospital appointments or errands as required.
Support the House during exeats, half-terms, and term transitions.
Attend house meetings, school functions, and Open Mornings as required.
Person Specification
Essential
A-level Drama (or equivalent) or higher qualification in Drama or Performing Arts.
Experience working with young people in an educational or extracurricular setting, particularly in Drama.
Strong interest and/or experience in technical theatre (lighting, sound, props, costume).
Effective communicator and team player.
Pastoral awareness and the ability to build strong, supportive relationships with pupils.
Organised, enthusiastic, and able to take initiative in both Drama and boarding environments.
Willingness to contribute fully to the life of a busy boarding school.
Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as required.
Desirable
Teaching qualification or experience working in a school setting.
Experience of performing arts beyond school, e.g., in amateur theatre.
Knowledge of LAMDA syllabus and other drama examination systems.
First Aid training and awareness of safeguarding procedures (training provided if needed).

The role is ideal for a recent Drama graduate or someone aspiring to a future teaching career in the Arts or education more broadly.
Hours of work to be agreed upon appointment but will comply with boarding standards in terms of time off during the day. There is no weekend work in Boarding (Friday 1600- Monday 0800) but there will be intermittent requirement to support Drama over the weekend if there is a performance.
