Retail Manager Charity Shop

Newcastle Emlyn, WLS, GB, United Kingdom

Job Description

Our charity shop in Newcastle Emlyn has been part of the community since 2017, creating connections that go far beyond retail. As Retail Manager, you'll work alongside volunteers to maintain a welcoming space where every customer interaction reflects the values and care that define our hospice work.

This isn't just about running a shop - it's about representing Skanda Vale Hospice in the heart of our community, creating a place where people feel valued, and ensuring that every pound raised supports the kind of unhurried, person-centred care that makes a real difference to people living with life-limiting illness,

About Skanda Vale Hospice

Skanda Vale Hospice offers unhurried, highly individualised care and respite to families affected by life-limiting illnesses, completely free of charge. Compassion is at the heart of what we do, expressed by human kindness, generosity and a deep commitment to the well-being of everyone we care for and work alongside.

What will I be doing?

Creating a welcoming environment

Work with our volunteer team to maintain a shop that feels warm and inviting, where customers enjoy browsing and feel connected to the hospice's work. This includes keeping displays fresh and appealing, ensuring the space is clean and well-organised, and helping create that distinctive atmosphere that makes our shop special.

Working alongside volunteers

Support and mentor our volunteer team through regular one-to-ones and informal check-ins. You'll help new volunteers settle in, identify training needs, and create an environment where everyone feels confident and valued. This means being someone who can guide without micromanaging, and who understands that volunteers bring both their time and their heart to this work.

Managing day-to-day operations

Take responsibility for opening and closing the shop, handling cash control, sorting, pricing and giftaiding donated items. You'll also work proactively to encourage stock donations and ensure we always have interesting items to offer. You'll also make sure unsellable items are recycled appropriately, maximising income from everything we receive.

Connecting with community

Be an active member of Newcastle Emlyn's community, supporting local events and representing the hospice at fundraising activities. This role offers the chance to build meaningful relationships and help people understand the work their support makes possible.

Which will be my working hours?

Ideally, 4 days of 7 hours per week.

What are the benefits of being the retail manager?

Meaningful work

The opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of patients and families, knowing that your work directly supports care that sees the whole person, not just their diagnosis.

Support and development

Comprehensive training and ongoing support to help you feel confident in your role, plus access to our Team Pantry and opportunities for professional growth.

Community connection

The chance to be part of something larger than yourself, working alongside people who share a commitment to creating space for what matters most in life. Part of the role involves encouraging potential volunteers to join both the shop and the wider hospice team.

What do I need to have?

Experience and knowledge

Previous retail experience, ideally at supervisory level in a small charity, community or gift shop, with a strong understanding of customer service and visual merchandising. You'll need basic administration skills and the ability to handle the physical demands of sorting and moving donated goods regularly.

Working with people

Strong organisational skills and the ability to work alongside volunteers from different backgrounds and experience levels. This means being someone who can motivate and guide others while creating an atmosphere where people want to contribute their best.

Understanding our approach

A genuine connection to Skanda Vale Hospice's values and the ability to represent us thoughtfully in the community. You'll need to understand both the importance of professional retail standards and the deeper purpose behind everything we do.
