About the role

East Devon District Council is looking to recruit a Revenues Inspector to carry out inspections of domestic and commercial properties to ensure Council Tax and Business Rate records are accurate, income is maximised and to ensure discounts, reliefs and exemptions are awarded in accordance with legislation and Council policy. You will be monitoring new build properties, issuing completion notices and making requests to the Valuation Office Agency for properties to be brought into the Council Tax and Rating Lists.

You will also investigate properties to verify exemptions, ensure that discounts and reliefs are issued correctly and take appropriate action where those reliefs no longer apply, including recommendations to issue a penalty. This will include ensuring the efficient and effective maintenance of the computerised database in relation to new and altered properties / reliefs and keeping abreast of current legislation relating specifically to the administration of Local Taxation, whilst also ensuring that Council Tax and Business Rate accounts are accurate, complete and up to date.

This is a part time position working 24 hours per week [Monday to Friday], out in the District, in the Council Office at Honiton and remotely from home. Working pattern to be agreed with successful candidate.

About you

You must have GCSE's in Maths and English at Grade C/5 or above (or equivalent qualifications/ experience) and ideally have an understanding of current issues in local government. You will be confident working alone, have excellent written and verbal communication skills and great accuracy and attention to detail. You'll also have the ability to show empathy with customers and balance the competing demands of a busy workload. Previous experience of completing investigations would be an advantage. Experience of Council Tax, Business Rates, Capita Academy and Office 365 is desirable but not essential as training will be given.

You will need to hold a valid driving licence to enable effective travel throughout the district (reasonable adjustments may be possible according to the Equality Act).

About us

In return, you will be part of an organisation which works together with local people to create great value services and an outstanding community, economy and environment in which people want to live, work, visit and enjoy now, and for future generations. And with our wide range of health and wellbeing benefits, our highly flexible and collaborative hybrid Worksmart working arrangements as well as our commitment to continuous learning and development, you can be confident of joining a dedicated community of colleagues who are Happy, Healthy and Here.
